Reflection
A difficult but necessary post:

So hard to digest five years will now have passed next week since the tragedy of Feb 14, 2008.

Reflect a moment to honor and remember the victims, survivors and responders.

University did a wonderful job not allowing the event to define us. I visited the inside of Cole Hall this past summer for the first time since its re opening and was impressed with the renovations.04-bow

Agreed. NIU has done a fine job. It's a shame school shootings have become commonplace. It has to stop.

RE: Reflection
Definitely is weird...

For myself, I've finally been able to move on while recognizing that it is a life changing event that happened in my past.

Very weird that we are coming up on five years, it seems like a lifetime ago to me.

Will anyone be attending the five year anniversary? I don't think I will, I think it's better for me to move on, and just take a few moments to remember on that day..

Still very surreal

I think you are wise HF38. You want to remember for their and their families sake, but no sense dwelling. Everybody has to deal with it in their own way, I think.
It was a sad and scary day in my life, I know. But at the same time, a good day to remember all the good friends you have and the well wishes they sent!

I've mentioned this before but this book about the shooter and the incident is well worth reading:

RE: Reflection
One of the great things about schools is that they are places of constant renewal. Every year a new wave of students. kinda how life is. This stuff-the people, experiences, it's a part of us and of NIU. It'll always be in us and deep in NIU somewhere.

There was a great column in the Chronicle today I hope someone not posting from a phone can grab the link to.

forward together forward

There's victory in view.

I'm guessing you mean the Kate Schott piece...

I had actually managed to forget it was the 5th year anniversary of that horrible, horrible day until I clicked on this thread.

Glad I remembered. Think I'll walk over to the memorial this afternoon..

Forward together forward..

That's the one. Thanks FC.

I relate to the person she mentioned who thought of Valentine's Day for the first time this year.

As long as we remember, even if once a year for one hour, their names live on forever.

I will gladly remember each year for one hour of course, but please find a way to have the Tribune and WGN stop remembering every year.

RE: Reflection
I'm reminded of my philosophy class when trying to answer my very own basic question.

What does it mean to each of us to "move on" ?

Q. Do we simply dull & put an emotional distance to past memories, good and bad?
A. Passage of time alone cannot heel all wounds and hearts broken. I miss my wife terribly today yet still try to " move on "by seeking a date on match.com . There will always be a hole in my heart for both of the losses. Valentines Day makes it all the more challenging.

Q. Do we remember yet also let go of its grip?
A. Depends how deeply you internalize losses.

Q. Do those most directly impacted move on any more or less easily than others less impacted?
A. Of course not.

Q. Is moving on much more difficult when an emotional loss resulted from a tragedy ... ie DUI crash or gun violence?
A. I suspect so.

RE: Reflection
I will never be able to see Valentine's Day as I did before 2/14/08. As a parent, I cannot even begin to fathom the pain that 10 parents felt when their child was killed. It's something they will never truly get over.

My son was at NIU that day. This was his post on facebook today.

"It's hard to believe it's been 5 years since the NIU shooting. 2/14 is a day that will never have the same meaning to me for the rest of my life. It is a day that I will never forget where I was, how I felt, and how it changed my Alma Mater forever. As the days and weeks went by, we mourned together and we healed together. It made us stronger, it brought us together, and it showed us just how delicate our lives are. I am proud to be an NIU alum, and I love my Huskie family. Forward, together, forward."

Prayers for continued healing for all.
