14 Scholarahips
It looks like accd. to Huskiewire the class included only 14 scholarship players out of 24. That is amazing IMO and makes this class even more impressive.

Is this the highest number of walk-ons?

RE: 14 Scholarahips
Just taking a guess, but here is what I would assume would be scholarship athletes vs. walk-ons...
Scholarships:
Chad Beebe
Brandon Mayes
Blake Holder
Robert Jones IV
Sean Folliard
Draco Smith
Malik Mitchell
Joel Bouagnon
Shane Wimann
Mycial Allen
Jordan Huff
Aregeros "Ducee" Turner
William Lee
Rumored Grey-Shirt - would count in 2014 class:
Josh Brebant
Walk-On
Nick Cieslak
Ryan Stendler
Jackson Abresch
Ben Maruska
Tate Briggs
Justin Corbet
Nick Calhoun
Zeb McLaurin
Jake Heckel
Jamaal Payton
The impressive part is several of these walk ons had offers to FCS, etc schools. It goes to show you how exciting it is to play at NIU even if you don't have the full-ride.
I'm not sure if Brebant is considered one of the 14 "scholarship" guys or not. It would make sense. it seems like the "10" initial scholarship commits would include Brebant, and then Huff, Mitchell, Turner and Lee were the 4 that they got towards the end.
So you figure Mitchell replaces Winfield. Then, I guess it's reasonable to assume that without Kimble leaving we wouldn't have gotten Turner. Who knows, maybe that ends up being a blessing in disguise???

I think I heard that Folliard actually counted towards last years class since he enrolled early, if thats the case I think Stendler would be out 14th scholarship for this class which is why he flipped late.

RE: 14 Scholarahips
Since Sims is a SR what would be the point of GS Brebant (instead of RS)?
We need a FG/PAT kicker for 2014.
I guess we could just GS him to save his RS year in case of injury?

I guess just to save the scholarship for 2013 right? Even if you RS, you still take up a scholarship as far as I know. So, Carey figures then he can just replace Sims' scholarship and not feel like they're unnecessarily using a year's worth of a scholarship on a kicker who probably wouldn't see the field.

That is truly outstanding...to me this says a ton about where this program stands.

Sims is a senior this year? I was thinking he was a junior.

True SR.
He started in 2010 but Mike C took over when he missed several badly.

RE: 14 Scholarahips
You knew the number of scholarships available was really low when it came out that Briggs is walking on. Heck, he would've been a solid get as a scholarship guy, let alone walking on.
For a class with 14 rides available in the midst of losing our head coach, it looks solid on paper. Hopefully it works out that way on the field.

RE: 14 Scholarahips
So how does it all work with the preferred guys? If they don't have a scholarship now, are they guaranteed one later or are they competing with the other in hopes of earning one down the road? I assume some won't make it, right. I thought walk-ons can't sign LOIs but I guess preferred walk-ons can.

Aren't there some private scholarships within athletics?
Also can't the schools assist the P W/O kid with applying for aid and other moneys for school?

Walk-ons and Preferred Walk-ons have to compete for their scholarships and there is no guarantee they will ever get one. And they can have one for a year and then not have one depending on the new recruiting class for that year.
There aren't any private scholarships like they have for academics as I believe that would be an NCAA violation. But yes, the athlete can get regular financial aid like every other student in need.

Especially when you consider that most of the walk ons are OOS talent(Wisky). Walk ons are usually instate/local players who have no scholarship offers above D2. The fact that some of the walkons actually gave up FCS scholarships to walk on a NIU is quite impressive.

It only takes 6 months of living within the state to become an IL citizen, if the Wisky walkons come as soon as their spring term is over they can become Illinois residents for tuition purposes by December 2013.

If they only gave out 14 schollys I would say they did a tremendous job with this class.
