Aresco "working" to Keep C-7 until 2014
Sounds like Aresco is foolishly willing to give up the Big East name in exchange for the C-7 staying until 2014. C-7 likley gets MSG, but I think everyone already knew that.

In basketball, Aresco and the Big East are working on keeping the Catholic 7 in the league for one more season, along with Rutgers, Louisville and Notre Dame, which will mean an 18 team configuration for the 2013-2014 season.

When Rutgers, Louisville, Notre Dame and the Catholic 7 leave in 2014, the Big East will add Tulane and presumably East Carolina, which will be elevated to full membership status.

One of the main negotiating points will be the name “Big East” which the Catholic 7 group wants. Aresco and the Big East will listen and could agree to giving up the name, with some concessions, one of which will include an understanding not to withdraw until July 1, 2014.

Yup. Sounds like its a very real possibility. I ddint think everyone could pull everything together that quick. I mean, we are talking about establishing a whole new conference. Apparantly, the C-7 believe that it can be done.

well, considering how fast the Temple situation last year in the BE, and VCU/Butler in the A10 came together- it's not that much of a surprise in some ways. If folks are motivated, things can happen quickly.

while true, I think given the other snippets of news we've seen(like the Tulane president yesterday saying not sure if 2013 or 2014 or 2015)- it does kind of fit.

RE: Aresco "working" to Keep C-7 until 2014
I'm not totally surprised that 2013 is possible. I always figured that the delays would be on the Aresco end.

What's their name? Alternately, can the issue of the name be settled that quickly?
What does their TV contract look like? Football? Basketball?

I figured that staying through 2014 was a very minor concession on our part. Especially since leaving in 2013 would be an opposed withdrawal, so Aresco & Co could tear up the prenup, keep the credits and sue for exit fees.

He's important in that Aresco (and other muckety-mucks) talk to him. So you can take this as coming from Aresco.

Exactly. This guy always leaks Aresco's side of the story. What I find encouraging is that "Jersey Guy's" one-sided posts have gone from: C7 league not starting until 2015 --- to league not starting until 2014 -- to league may not start until 2014 if Big East gives the name to the C7.

Sounds to me like the negotiations are going quite well!

I'm sure Fox is pushing the BE7 to get out for 2013.

lol...well, they are going well for the C-7. I suspect this also explains why the nBE has no contract. They still dont know what they are selling or what they will be called. A group largely made up of CUSA teams going by a completely unknown generic name with a conference set up slapped together in a few months is going to be worth much less than a conference that at least has the well knwn branding of the existing Big East name. Without this being settled, the value of the nBE would be up in the air. So, no contract.

So of the 4 things we want how would you rank them:

A)2013 release
B) Big East name
C) tournament credits (or cash equivalent)
D) MSG site

For me it's: DCBA

RE: Aresco "working" to Keep C-7 until 2014
I am passing on something that was on the Big East board. I cant say wheather the guy is legit or not, but the information he is passing on sounds like what I would expect the prenup to have. Lets put it this way, I wouldnt be surprised if this is pretty much what the real situation is. That said, at this point, its nothing more than a post on the Big East board.

Ok well this will show ajerseyguy is full or crap but it also isn't great news for the football schools either. I was asked by my source not to give their name. Here is what I was sent when I emailed said source about the Big East name.

Current stance is:

A fight to the death on both sides.

Reality is:

The separation agreement from many moons ago says that if both want it, then it goes to binding arbitration in Providence, Rhode Island (location of the conference office and founding member Providence College).

Our group has one founding member, UConn. Their group has Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Georgetown - five founding members.

Don't like those odds but would like to kick their butts.

to me this seems very realistic. I think Aresco probably knows that, and is trying to get anything back in return for the name. Having us for another year would be worth $$$ to the them, so it does make sense.

The question I have in all of this- if that is the case, do we take the tack like no, we're out now, knowing we're good in arbitration for the name? I think Fox really will want us for 2013 and that 500 million number may be a reflection of that.
