Quote:Taylor hit rock bottom in August 1995. On one particular night, a drunken Taylor backed his car into a light poll and then drove his car across the street to a church parking lot where he turned it off and went to sleep. After police found him while checking on the light post, they measured his blood alcohol level. It was allegedly .247, more than twice the legal limit.
He fell off the wagon several years ago and has been spotted drinking in Norfolk, in Richmond during the CAA tournament, etc. He was kept around with no intervention. Recently, he showed up to his coach's show (ironically, sponsored by Bud Light and hosted at a bar) and was very obviously inebriated. He proceeded to spill water all over himself, slur his words, and rambled and mumbled about all manner of crazy, inane things. He couldn't even say his own players' names correctly (ODU took the video down, but here's the blurb). http://www.lostlettermen.com/odu-coachs-...-eyebrows/
It's not clear whether his drinking precipitated his poor performance, or vice versa, but either he wasn't offered or wouldn't accept any help to deal with his relapse.
Sad to hear....hope he can get the help he needs...especially with all the available "free time" he will have in the coming months.
It is sad. As much as I dislike ODU seeing as their VCU's rival, the way this has gone done is not good and I'm afraid he's nowhere near rock bottom. Allegedly, he was drunk at last night's game, and then there's stuff with his marriage, and a bunch of people around him passing away recently. As a human, I am worried for him and I really hope ODU does everything they can to get him help even as they are kicking him to the curb. It's not their responsibility but it's the right thing to do.

I doubt they will.
Pretty snarky response from someone who obviously knows little to nothing about this school or program. I do, and I believe that Old Dominion is an honorable institution that prides itself in having outstanding values. I am a grad, was an employee, am a season ticket holder and donor, and have two children attending.
This is a crappy situation for everyone and, unless you have something intelligent to say, common sense would dictate that you hold back on statements like that.

I'm sorry, I'm in a pretty foul mood.
Really, I get the sense that ODU has tried. Surely there have been conversations and attempts to help, both formal and informal. These must have been rebuffed. At this point, your AD is probably making sure your security guards have a picture of your ex-coach. It sucks, but once things reach the point of a mid-season firing, things are pretty far gone.

Blaine Taylor.
It must be a pretty rough year in Denton.
Oh, dang. Thought that was about ODU taking Lutz. Would be weird to see him in CUSA but would like to get him off our payroll. We're still paying the guy and he's been gone for 3 friggin' years.

How about a guy who was a hot shot assistant for a long time and will have one year of head coaching experience after this season? Take a look at Tony Benford ... PLEASE! UNT fans are begging ...!

NO ODU hire the coach we presently have at Charlotte. He's great! He knows how to win! He knows how to recruit! He knows how to teach! He's a really good coach. And you could hire him at a great price. You don't want to wait until we win the conference this year and get into the sweet sixteen. That would be MAJOR mistake.
