Next years tournament
At the tip Off Club luncheon today coach Foley said the tournament next year would be in New Orleans. I had thought it was going to be in Hot Springs another year. I saw on the sunbelt website that the women were going to start a day earlier than the men (which was the format before Hot Springs) but the site is still listed on the SB site as being at HS next year.

They'll be sorry they moved it from Hot Springs. This was supposedly because Western and Middle complained about it, and the Western President was the one who hired our new commissioner and the first thing he told him was to move the tournament out of Hot Springs.
And Middle is leaving anyway, so what are they complaining about. Stupid!

Doc; Did you hear any reasons why some want the Tournament moved from HS?

Well at least the team will get to stay in a hotel during the tournament for a change.

Makes a lot of sense. New Orleans is a lot further from Bowling Green than Hot Springs. I guess New Orleans is reasonably close to USA and ULL (but not all that close), and in the same State as ULM. Seems a treck for everyone else. Plus New Orleans couldn't care less about the Sun Belt Tournament- They have events like the Superbowl, Final 4, and BCS Championship game. Hotels are much more expensive there as well. If true, a very stupid move by the new commissioner. I could see having it in another smaller, centrally located city instead of in Hot Springs. I could live with Southaven, MS., Huntsville, Al, or some other smaller city that might embrace the tourney. But, New Orleans is simply an awful choice.

You just proved my point. Really not near anyone. Overpriced food and hotels. I wonder where it will be held. UNO campus? Tulane's gym which used to seat 4500 might be perfect, but I think they're expanding it and don't really see that as a possibility. The New Orleans Arena is much to big. Superdome? Don't think we could fill that. Well RBL and his wife will be there. Probably Yncopirt and his wife. Not sure who else.

What is the venue in New Orleans? Folks are there to watch basketball- not sure they are looking for a ton to do, although Hot Springs has plenty. I think most cities have some local places to eat. I guess I've been to Bourbon Street one to many times, but New Orleans is one of the last places I would want to go for the tourney. Don't have any desire to deal with the traffic, crime, and inflated prices.

RE: Next years tournament
I attended the tournament in 2002BF(before Foley)in New Orleans, when New Orleans was still in the Belt and the host school. I'd guess there weren't a dozen fans from UALR and probably not many more
New Orleans Privateers fans when we played them. I remember it being pretty dismal attendance wise. Seems I remember South Alabama and Western(they always bring the most)having the most fans there. I remember ASU having a pretty good contingent there. Attendance was pretty bad for most sessions. Looking at my old program from that tournament, Alicia Cash is the only name I recognized on the roster of the women. While there is much more to do in New Orleans, I don't think the tournament will do as well there as they do in Hot Springs.

The Trojans knocked New Orleans out in the quarter-finals, and we got beat by Lafayette in the semi's.

I didn't stay for the championship game, because there was a dead day in between the semi-finals and the championship games, so I came home and watched the final on TV. Western Kentucky beat Louisiana-Lafayette, so I'd guess it was probably a fair crowd. Seems like we had better crowds when it was held at Barton. I don't think it'll be any better now, and especially with New Orleans not in the league.

Scott the arena is not by a bunch of high end food. Hot Springs has hotel and food within walking distance.

the area in hot springs is safe and I can take my kids. don't know that NO is not but I will not know.

I know I will go to the southland when it moves to hot springs in our place.

There is absolutely nothing near Lakefront arena (I guess there is a lake). In Hot Springs you could walk out the door, find a nice reasonably priced restaurant, or get hot bath and massage. I'm not even trying to compare Hot Springs and New Orleans as venues for the Sun Belt Conference, since there is no comparison. But I realize that teams would want to move the tournament somewhere else at some point. I think Huntsville, Al. would have been a good place to have it. Biloxi is better than New Orleans since, at least, I think they would have appreciated it for tourism purposes a lot more than New Orleans. Maybe a place like Columbus, Ga. which has a beautiful arena and would be near GaState and the Alabama schools. Tunica would be centrally located and now has an arena that could be used for basketball. The Sun Belt in New Orleans is like a pimple on an elephant's butt. New Orleans folks didn't care about Sun Belt basketball when we had a team there. We will get no locals and the distance and costs will keep traveling fans away. Sad day for the Belt if this is true.

I'm not happy at all with New Orleans. It is not a central location and it gives bias towards Texas members that are not even in the conference today.

Wouldn't be suprised if WKU and MTSU complained (wanting South Haven, Huntsville, or Nashville) and then they moved it to New Orleans like "there we moved it for you".

Really wanted to see South Haven, MS get a try but oh well.

You got that right. It's been ten years, but don't remember seeing anything to eat or motels within three or four miles of the arena. I stayed at a Ramada Inn about four or five miles away(the nearest I could find)in a real bad looking part of town. There was a restaurant on a casino boat on the lake about a couple of miles from the arena. The food wasn't worth a ****. One trip for a meal, and then it was a trip to the toilet. And back where the Ramada was, there were a few franchise restaurants that I wouldn't get out of the to car to eat in one of them. About the only time I didn't eat at the arena was when I went to the French Market.
