RE: Paying College Players
Interesting...
But i think the major conferences break away from the NCAA before the NCAA allows compensation...
Also all of these guys have a choice to not go to college and go play in Europe, China, etc...
Also some of them are being compensated $30k/year in room and board..no student loans, etc..RGIII graduated in 3 years and got an MBA before he left Baylor...some of these guys should make better use of their time..
I also think if they want to be compensated then they should have to pay for tuition room and board..can't have both.

RE: Paying College Players
of course football & basketball players in the televised, well attended games should be paid....tuition, room, board, books and fees are a pittance compared to the BILLIONS made off their names and toil by the universities, coaches and others. When Michigan or Ohio State sells out 7 home games a year at 110,000 seats @ over $100 a game on average with parking, concessions, etc...EACH season gets them around 1.4 BILLION and that ain't counting TV money or money from memoribilia--all made off the backs of players who can't even afford to buy their own damn jersey sold at the university bookstore and online all over the world.
In basketball, the NCAA is paying the NCAA almost 11 BILLION dollars to televise the tournament alone. With that kind of money, the actual workers (players) damn well ought to get a big share of the gigantic cash pie.

They could go get a regular job if they feel they're being victimized by the system. This is not indentured servitude. Being an impoverished student is not solely for athletes. My friend, Ed was a FB player from Alabama, the dorm was a big step-up from the dirt floor home, he grew up in.

I agree as well. I could see $2k/year to cover extra gas, expenses, but thats it. God bless our student athletes, but they get tens of thousands of dollars in free education, room and board. Many of them are replaceable as well with kids on the recruiting cusp, if they rather be a traditional student with 80k in loans, have at it.

In all reality, paying players opens up workmen's comp issues .

no person outside of athletics should ever feel sorry for the student-athlete 'plight'.
to have that opportunity to get out of college with a bachelor's degree debt free is something to be cherished, not ignored.

Wouldn't they have to pay taxes on it too?

I agree about title 9 being a problem.....however, I don't believe most on this board have ANY idea about how many hours a week--all year long, these kids are obligated to....and maybe NIU isn't the best example but the big time guys are getting ripped off....it is like selling a platinum CD and giving the lead singer NONE of the money.

Still disagree to paying the kids.
Bigger programs also tend to have better amenities and exposure. Pro's and Con's to all Programs.
They can do they're own due diligence and decide if/where they want to be a Student/Athlete. Which is why it's important to keep the STUDENT as the most important part of HS and College.

I realize they put in a lot of effort. But my daughter goes to private college which is $45k a year with room and board. What good comes out of paying the players? How much is enough? What about taxes, workers comp, liability, etc.? The haves already get the best players. Can you imagine what would happen if they started paying them? Mid majors would fall even further behind.
