Those school are getting what they paid for. Shame on UB. Witherspoon tenure deserves a higher pay. If your not gonna fire him, you can atleast pay him average salary among league coaches. He's atleast gotten his team to the MAC finals and multiple times in the semis.

I agree with this. Reggie has been the best coach that UB has had in football or basketball since they joined the MAC. Men's basketball has been the one prominent program to give some pride to Buffalo.

In a dozen years he has not won a conference title or taken Buffalo to the dance. We've also not won any of the also ran tournaments or beaten a ranked opponent.

Reggie is paid fine for what he has done.

I agree. Reggie is an okay coach and he did a good job elevating a downtrodden program to respectability but he hasn't been able to take the next step. At what point do you say "This is not enough"?

As for the question earlier about whether coaches salaries produce success, I haven't seen that data but Kyle Whelliston had a breakdown of basketball budgets by conference and it was uncanny how the success of programs and conferences were in almost exact order of dollars spent. I'll see if I can find it.

Be careful about when you want the administration to say enough. UT said 'enough' with Stan Joplin after 07-08 because fans were getting tired of 'only' having 18-19-20 win season, then look what happened to us. 03-banghead

Ohio did not technically fire TOS, but look at what happened here since we had a change...

Joplin was a good coach, but the point shaving scandal happened on his watch with his players he recruited involved. Surprised another MAC school hasn't hired him. He might be to loyal to Toledo to want to coach BGSU.

If I remember correctly, it hadn't come out (at least not publicly, I don't know about internally) yet. He is currently coaching high school basketball at a suburban Toledo school (Springfield High School). He is also an administrator at that school (assistant principal?).

I don't think so. His results have been pretty good in the last 4-5 years. Experiencing a down year right now...but nothing that warrants him getting canned IMO.

RE: Salaries for Mens Bball coaches?
It's interesting that salaries are listed but at UMass salaries (250k from 215k) are kept low but total compensation can reach 3 times the salary amount.

The Gazatte site is now behind a pay wall with a 5 article register free option so will post here.

Quote:University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg’s newly signed contract extension gives the Minuteman coach considerable bump in compensation and increased incentives to be successful on the court and in the classroom.

He's guaranteed to make at least $665,000 and could reach over $800,000 if UMass is successful on the court, at the ticket window and in the classroom. The new deal, which replaces the final two seasons of the initial contract he signed in 2008, runs through April 22, 2017
..
Kellogg received a $35,000 raise in base salary bringing him to $250,000 per year. The bigger jump came in the section of his contract listed as “other compensation”. For speaking appearances and television and radio shows he’ll now receive $415,000 compared to $310,000 in in the 2011-12 year of his first contract.

The other compensation total can reach as high as $550,000 if he reaches certain goals (even if the total incentives value of the goals below plus the $415,000 adds up to more, his added compensation is capped at $550,000). Kellogg receives:
* $75,000 for making NCAA Tournament
* $25,000 for a final ranking of 60 or better in the Ratings Percentage Index (which compares all Division I teams based on on-court success and schedule strength)
* $25,000 for strength of schedule ranked in top 75
* $25,000 for 20 Division I wins
* $20,000 if home attendance averages over 5,500 fans per game.
* 20,000 for reaching the NIT
* $20,000 top four conference finish
* $20,000 for team academic progress rate score of over 940
* $20,000 for a graduation retention rate of 80 percent of higher

Kellogg was glad the contract emphasized academic success as well.

“That’s as important to me as the basketball stuff because the kids here should be student-athletes,” he said. “We want all of our kids to graduate and have opportunities for life after basketball.
Kellogg has additional incentives not subject to the $550,000 cap of $25,000 per round of the NCAA Tournament UMass reaches and $5,000 per round of the NIT, figures that are the same as in his previous contract.

If Kellogg leaves his position before his contract is complete he would now have to pay UMass $500,000 an increase of $200,000.

I feel like this is the way to go - having an average to somewhat below average base pay with a ton of incentives.
