On whether or not ETSU had plans to reach out to Phil Fulmer:
Dr. Noland-"We would be foolish not to reach out to coach Fulmer."

Unknown question-
Dr. Noland-"We are going to take our time and account for growth. [Sustainability] is something we want so that people 40-50 years down the road won't have their hands tied."

On conference affiliation:
Dr. Noland-"We'll be looking for conferences that push us academically, as well as athletically."

On his pair of yellow pants:
Dr. Noland-"I have 2 pairs of yellow pants, those are from J Crew.... I didn't know I was up on the web."

"With the coming football program and all that goes with it, what will be done to ensure that our school has a sustainable football program? Having "green" football would be something special that most schools can't boast about, and since we are starting from the ground up, why not build it the right way? Will there be sustainable architecture and efficient lighting and healthy food choices at games? These are the questions that interest me most about Buccaneer football."

they said they would have more on the interview and possible stadium locations in the next issue

That's an *incredibly* excellent and astute question. Obviously not from a hard-core football person, but I hope Noland keeps that one in the back of his mind, and that choices are at least made in that direction. And I like his answer, even if it doesn't fully answer the question (since that would be impossible to do at this juncture, anyway).

The "green" question was posed by the same guy who has been posting the "Dear Dr. Noland ... let the students vote on the football fiasco" image on every page I've seen... he pretty much has gotten hammered by everyone and then he pops up with a really good point! I like that. It's a great assertion which I would hope is already on the radar. The chance to be LEEDS certified is a really great thing. Most field turf is now made from recycled material and the little black pellets that are the "artificial" sub for sand is from recycled tires.

App State has multiple initiatives incorporated into their campus from residence halls, retrofitting of older res and academic buildings with more sustainable features, the stadium has sustainability incorporated, and they now have a new working windmill above the stadium that was on the grid for the Broyhill (which is now closed to all activities). Just as an "in person" view of these things, it's pretty impressive.

Seeing ETSU incorporate the things that could lead to the LEED certification would be great. It's the "wave" to move facilities in that direction, so I say let's ride the wave!

And don't forget to flush Up for 1 and down for 2... work joke. :-)

I agree with you on the natural grass, but I don't think there is any doubt that the new stadium will have the "Fieldturf" or whatever the surface that is in the baseball stadium is called. Its cheaper, more durable and supposedly much safer than the old artificial turf of 20 or 30 years ago.

Natural grass maintenance costs would be around $30,000 annually. FieldTurf costs about $5,000.

I think we'd all love natural grass, but you can't blame them for trying to save some money where they can...

If we do fieldturf, the field can be used for multiple sport. My feeling is you'll see a sport like women's lacrosse added and they can use the new stadium if necessary. Just my two cents

I would be shocked if we go with natural grass. I'd love to see it, but the field turf is easier on the wallet

I just think football should be played on natural grass. These days it would make our stadium unique if had it.

The cost of upkeep will keep that from happening but some of that could be offset if enough people are "reassigned" to mow.

Why is the East Tennessean getting the scoops on one on ones with Sander and Noland and not the mainstream media?

Am I missing something? Have the broadcast or traditional print/online media had this kind of interview with Sander and Noland?

To me, this is very distressing. I hate to count chickens before they hatch, but it seems a major annoucement is coming if the vibe is to be believed.

But the one thing that can kill this is apathy from the locals. You need Joe Johnson City to get behind ETSU, to buy tickets, etc.

Joe Johnson City isn't going to get behind ETSU if this move forward isn't publicized. And at the current schedule of publicity, consisting of one interview by the Press last summer where Brian Noland was asked about his jump shot, is not going to be enough.

Sander is who talked to the Press and gave them the numbers they used in the article today about how much football will cost.
So yes they do have access.
