That is a rendering for Gilbert which is opening F2013.

I really hope they do Neptune North like that.

Let's put it this way. I'm as big a supporter of NIU as anyone. If I had college-age kids, I would proudly send them to NIU - but NOT if they are required to stay in the dorms (unless it were to be in a select dorm with serious students).

What is happening in the dorms?

I prefer not to elaborate, but let's just say it's not safest environment for a teenager who is serious about getting an education.

Will that be open to all students or selected students by program/major (such as the honors floor)?

Many students are undecided? If a student pics a major does it mean they are serious?
Honors students are a small minority.
How do you group students?
How do you decide who has a serious scholarly attitude?

I have not read/heard anything on it.

I know 10 years back when I was a student and involved on some housing committees meetings, there was discussion of an upperclassmen/Grad dorm on that side of campus. Gilbert was always brought up but the Housing people dismissed it because NIU had spent a big chunk of money making it into offices less than 7 years prior to that meeting.

If you and Bob aren't going to elaborate about the dorms, then please don't bring it up. All we're getting is some ominous vibe that may be trivial to many. Some of the dorms at FSU and Florida made the worst NIU dorms look palatial.

I have what I consider good reasons for not elaborating on the problems in the towers. Suffice it to say if I had college-age kids, they wouldn't be staying in Grant or Stevenson.

I'll leave it at that.

I lived in Grant in 07-08. I never experienced any serious issues. Only issues were those that are typical for college age kids.

If you robbed someone, I hope you at least have some brains to leave the immediate area and go far far away

Much safer than DeKalb and the NIU dorms

Interesting the only schools you mention are within the city of Chicago. Not a very valid comparison. There are plenty of good options close by that aren't in Chicago.

My oldest daughter went to Bradley because NIU didn't offer a degree in her specialty (Civil Engineering). My youngest daughter went to ISU because their program was stronger than NIU's in her specialty (Public Relations).

Bradley is right next to one of the most dangerous areas in Peoria. Bradley is a great academic school, but the campus and surrounding area are much more dangerous.

RE: Problems on College campuses
I want to know what is wrong with the dorms like Grant, preferably specific examples. And if it is so bad as some say, then I wouldn't say it is happening "everywhere" as I know people with kids at or just graduated U of I and other state and B-10 schools and have never heard of them "not feeling safe."

If you feel you can't say it on here, please send a PM. Confidentiality is assured. I have a family member that is looking at NIU.

It's weird, because I think somebody had statistics that showed the crime rate (maybe violent crime? I don't remember anymore) in DeKalb wasn't any worse than in other university towns in Illinois. Yet I never felt, nor ever met anybody who felt, unsafe when I was on campus in Champaign. That includes friends of mine who had their apartment (in the same building I lived in) broken into over winter break our Senior year. It sucked, but it never changed any of our opinions on the safety level of the town or campus.

I'm not sure what creates one perception versus the other if neither place is measurably more unsafe than the other.

Marketing creates perception. U.I. does an excellent job, NIU does a poor job.

Exactly what marketing would that be? I don't think putting up a billboard here or there, or having the occasional commercial on the BTN impacts how people perceive the safety level of a campus or city.
