Now we know why EMU signs big guys like JUCO Ajani and, of course, collegiate transfers like Riley.

Getting a good high school big man is pretty tough and probably won't get better until we put up some (plural) good winning seasons.

We offered 6'8 forward Jordan Nobles from Canton today, according to steve bell on twitter. Hopefully he commits...we desperately need some size for next year.

good to see that we're at least pursuing HS players. last year it was unclear to me if we were getting all transfers/JUCOs because that was Murphy's plan, or if it was because the HS players we wanted were going to other schools.

I have no idea why we are having problems with the high school recruits but they are rejecting us in droves, except:

Maybe the EMU "brand' is tarnished within the state of Michigan (and has been for some time).

My guess is:

1). We are having a very difficult time recruiting QUALITY players. One star recruits are always plentiful, but signing a one star MI high school recruit is not a recruiting success.

2). I believe Murphy likes transfers. I'd take Murphy's transfers over most two star high school recruits.

3). JUCOs serve several purposes: 1). they can fill immediate holes - doesn't take a JUCO 2 years to become a contributor. 2). In April the JUCOs are better than the high school kids left unsigned (some of which are academic question marks).

How good is he?

Two star?

How is he ranked in Bell's top senior players? Top 25? Top 35? Top 50?

Is he a legitimate MAC recruit?

I'd rather have a good JUCO or transfer than a questionable h.s. recruit.

That said, maybe Hoopster will look at lists of top h.s. seniors in MI and shed some light.

Wasn't ranked in Bell's top 25 front court players for 2013, wonder what other if any other Div I schools offered him? That's usually a better indication.

Nobles You tube highlights:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8aRVst0-RY

U of D offered him:

Wednesday, June 26, 2013Detroit Mercy offers Canton forward

By Evan Paputa Twitter @EvanPaputa

University of Detroit Mercy has made an offer to Jordan Nobles.

Nobles is a 6’8 forward from Canton High School in the 2014 class.

The senior to be Nobles was humbled by his the offer and is eager to venture further down the recruiting trail.

“When Coach Ray McCallum offered me, I was speechless. It was really unbelievable. I am really thankful for the offer.”

With Detroit being his first offer, Nobles was honored at the possibility of playing for a program with the monumental tradition and history such as U of D.

“To think that after my first college visit would also be my very first college scholarship offer, it’s just unreal.”

Nobles plays AAU ball for the Michigan Warriors and credits them for getting his game to the heights needed to earn a D1 offer.

I believe the MI big men class has been picked clean.

Now on to projects for UDM and EMU.

I would hope that Murphy stays true to his 'best available' attitude which can be high school, JUCO or transfer.

And a kid who can't make a top 25 senior big man list in MI isn't going to be a starter in the MAC and coaches shouldn't recruit hoping that a prospect upside potential is as a role player.

I've been around recruiting for a long time, decades, and a kid who isn't top 5 as a C (and say top 7 as PF) in Michigan isn't going to be a significant contributor in the MAC.

Recruiting rankings don't always mean a whole lot...
Who remembers the name Paris Bass from this time last year.
He became one of the hottest last minute recruits over the summer and ends up at UofD.
If UofD has offered as well, the kid can play and has a higher ceiling than what most "experts" have ranked.

RE: EMU Hoops Targets (2014)
FWIW, here is a post from a UDM fan group where someone attempted to rank the best available (uncommitted) MI h.s. players for 2014.

http://detroittitanhoops.com/phpBB3/view...&start=350

FWIW, the poster is now suggesting that UDM would (or might or might have) back off Nobles. We'll never beat UDM if we recruit a UDM Plan B recruit as an EMU Plan A recruit.

Maten (PF) is the one I want. Nobles is a Plan B recruit in my mind.

I don't see a center on this list who can play MAC ball as a 20 minute man. I see the centers as D-II material.

For those who show up next weeks scrimmage at the Rec/IM one will see what Ajayi can do as a center or PF or both.

If he can play some center in 2014/2015 we'll be in better shape. If he is really just a PF, then we are hurting big time at center.

BTW O/T (?) Whatever happened to Eric Moeller, the 'hot' transfer from Missouri we, FGCC, etc were recruiting?

He might be a sitout if I follow his Twitter.

and FGCU doesn't list him on their roster. How dastardly. 03-lmfao

i assume it's the tarnished brand. besides Ray Lee, who was the last sought-after MI HS student we recruited? Medlock wasn't a big name (although he really developed), Bowdry wasn't a very big name from what i remember. maybe Darryl Garrett? and before him, i can't remember. it seems like Barnes killed our reputation and it hasn't been repaired in the state among HS coaches.

Dear EMUAARON,
I agree with what you are saying, and would take it a step farther. Why weren't Ramsey, and more his associate coach McDowell (If that is correct), from Detroit Redford who was in the State finals a couple of years as their coach, unable to recruit Detroit specifically? I don't know if the other high school coaches in Detroit didn't like him or Ramsey, but we did not get anyone of any real talent when they were coaches at Eastern. That always surprised me.

RE: EMU Hoops Targets (2014)
Name to keep an eye on: Jordan Hare, forward at Rhode Island. Just saw Steve Bell tweeted that Hare is taking "an indefinite leave of absence from the team" to deal with a personal matter, and that transferring is an option. Hare is from Saginaw, so maybe Murph can work his transfer magic yet again. Don't want to speculate on the personal issue, but if it's a family reason, he could be granted a waiver to play immediately next season.

Pure speculation on my part, but it's worth monitoring, especially with the holes we will have in our front court next year.

One of our posters notified the coaching staff so they know, even if they didn't (know before hand).

I would be glad to have him.

I just can't believe all of these kids go to far away places like R.I.

Now FGCC or Miami(FL) I could see that. 03-cloud9
