Where's all the other stuff like a weight room, an indoor golf practice facility, concession stands, or sports medicine center? How do you expect to hold a spring football game in a place like that? Ohio needs to re-consider their design. It's too single-purposed and doesn't appear to have much forethought put into it.

Ohio built a weight room adjacent to Peden Stadium back in 1999.

I'm not sure what they consider to be the sports medicine center on campus but I know they have rehabilitation pools in the Convo.

Ohio just wanted to meet a few basic needs with this facility. The school isn't reconsidering the design either, shovels are going in the ground in a few months.

Its a sub par facility (less than I've come to expect from OU), and I should know being without anything UB fans have looked with interest at what everyone else in the MAC has.

Saying this is part of some "MAC Arms Race" is like saying when some banana republic gets a few planes its starting an arms race with a world power. It's a fine practice field but most of the MAC covered fields are so much more.

Ohio wanted to do more, but they couldn't raise any more money.

Like I said that's all well and good. But the title "arms race" is just a tad over the top considering this is not much more than EMU's Bubble and a whole lot less than some of the other schools are putting out..

But don't misread me here. Taking a note from Ferris Bueller:

Quote:Don't worry about it, we don't even have a piece of crap. We have to envy yours.

4 years... That's the timeline and I hope when it's done it will include some seating and other facilities.

BGSU announced that they will renovate the MAC's OG indoor facilty, the Perry Fieldhouse. It will include new Field Turf. This news was included as part of the PR announcing the insanely smart contract extension given to the hugely successful HC Dave Clawson

It really makes zero sense how Akron blows at football with the facilities they have.

Anybody just now building an IPF (and that includes NIU) is playing catch up in the arms race, not getting ahead.

BG's facility was pretty nice at the time. I still love the track setting. More room for spectators would be good but the track is pretty fast and they can host large meets. The refurb gives Clawson a leg up on continuing the good recruiting job he's done.

Akron's field house seats 1,200.

Wow. That is something special. I love that they added seating inside and a full size track. Wish Toledo would have done something like this.

I don't like it. Glad Toledo's is focused more on FB. I would rather see a separate indoor T&F facility where you could stage regional meets if UT had a real commitment to bigtime Men's and Women's T&F.

Coaching has a much more direct impact on success compared to facilities. We screwed up in that department in a major way when we hired Rob Ianello, and are still trying to recover.

The great facilities-porn myth: that facilities translate into success.

Indeed, and it just goes to show how hiring low-level AQ assistants is such a crapshoot. Ianello is a bust, while Urban Meyer builds up BG and makes history elsewhere. Both were WR coaches at Notre Dame.

Facilities don't translate to success, but they certainly don't hurt. Not too many recruits will see a new IPF and say "Wow, I have to go here now!", but the level of facilities can help show the commitment the university has to its program. I'm no psychology expert, but if you tour a brand new facility like Akron compared to a rusty old locker room somewhere else, it might subconsciously affect the way you look at other aspects of the school. But, you'll always see some illogical correlations between winning and facilities, take Vanderbilt and Auburn for example. A program comes down to a coach, but facilities can help retain them and keep the program going strong.

Akron's field house is also perfect to play indoor celebrity flag football games to stream online. It's the shooting location of a Super Bowl commercial or two over the last few years as well.

I'm not defending the building in any way. I'd rather they not build it.

I'm not trying to dog OU over building an indoor practice field. They do need one.

Its just that I've come to expect more from OU when it comes to stuff like this. For all the talk about looking to join some other conference, or about leafing the MAC, this is a very underwhelming move, and very MAC-like.

If you don't have the money to build it right, wait until you do. Don't settle for something inferior that you'll then be stuck with.

Pretty much the same situation with the Gene Cross fiasco at UT... First season in a refurbished Savage Arena, Cross comes up with a single digit win total for the year... Not to mention the alleged off the court shenanigans....

It is JSF's interpretation that the modest design for the Ohio IPF is a money issue but I think politics had a lot to play here.

The design 4 years ago was to have the IPF attached to Peden Stadium but to win ove the faculty they decided to opt for a design that was unattached from the football stadium and also had the side benefit of providing storage space for the Marching 110.

I would read the announcement that Ohio is at least building an IPF, one of its key gaps in its facility resume.

The next move for Ohio is to get a stadium expansion done but that is going to run somewhere around 20 million which they are fundraising now for. I'm not sure on what the new capacity will be but I assume it will be at least 30,000 seats (all BE schools are at least 30k).

As a for instance, what if it took 5-10 years? Do you keep waiting? The fundraising has already been several years, so maybe that's all they were going to get. Do you go with nothing or something?
