No, we needed a new arena. Continually playing in a high school gym that was the laughingstock of the conference made no sense.

Wait, this isn't the BG board...

NOOO!! Didn't you read, it's cursed. Don't jinx the football program!

How about one of the "coffee fund" people use their connections and cash that damn thing for recycling, use the money not for "coffee," but for a new, brightier paint job inside the Convo.

The convo needs way more NIU pix and all things NIU in it. It needs a winning team and more fans and it will become much brighter.

I always joke that's where our uglier and freakier fans are forced to sit and toil.

The women's game on Sunday is televised. It would be nice if the lights were turned on. Then again, maybe they won't want the TV audience to see all those collapsed upper bowl seats.

I have never been in an arena where the lights are turned off to make it look like a movie theater.

There have been wrestling meets at the Convo where they only turn on the lights under the scoreboard. It makes no sense, I have no idea who thinks it's a good idea.

Ah the spotlight match. Gives a bigger feel to a big match instead of wrestling it in our VE Court which is smaller than most of the kids HS gyms that they wrestled in.

As a former (crappy) high school wrestler I would not like it. It would be like an away match where the temp, humidity and sounds are totally different than what I am used to for all the other home matches.

If they sell out VE Court and there is additional large attendance demand for these big matches then fine but if not its a waste of resources for NIU.

"Spotlight wrestling" is done at the high school level. DeKalb H.S. has been doing it for years. I don't know if they're still doing it at the new DHS, but it made for a very cool atmoshphere at the old DHS.

Maybe we should also do that for basketball and shine the spotlight on only certain players.

In the very first game at the Convo, they had actual fireworks shooting down from the scoreboard. Now THAT was cool. Not sure about concerts in the Convo, but I don't believe it's been done since for a basketball game. Then again, there has been no reason to do it.

This dates back to when Ed Vatch was the assistant to Don Flavin and they installed a huge spotlight above midcourt in Evans Field House to give the wrestling meets a supposedly cool atmosphere. That notion of a "spotlight" match continued under Dave Grant and initially in the Convo, they'd put the wrestling mat up on a stage to enhance that spotlight affect. I still think winning is the single best affect.

John Feinstein is an outstanding writer for the Washington Post. His basketball books are brilliant.
