Common sense. There's an example of a deaf runner being able to see a flash from the starting gun.
Last year's 125 lb NCAA division I wrestling champion:

This rule can be good so long as it's not taken to the extreme that the rule around Women has..

By the way Bit, I remember when Dempsey did that. They showed it at the halftime of the game I was watching. I'm also proud to say I was watching the Jets and Raiders the day Heidi came on that was a whizzer.
I saw Dempsey's kick live on TV myself. It was one hell of a kick nobody thought was possible, especially from Dempsey...
I was also watching the Heidi game with my father, when they cut the broadcast with about a minute left to play and the game's outcome in doubt. The day after that game he was one of about a thousand newspaper writers across the nation to write that it was a stupid move by the network...
La Monica, Gus Otto, Ben Davidson, and George Blanda against Joe Willy, Emerson Boozer and the Jets, what a comeback. We got to see it (the final minute that is) on the nightly news, after Heidi. By the way, is it just me, or does Manziel remind you a little of Tarkenton?
A little. But I can remember times when Fran Tarkenton ran around in the backfield for nearly a minute before getting off a pass. When Manziel runs, it's rarely a scramble to pass. Most of the time he just tucks it and runs. Fran rarely did that, unless no passing options were available...
Nothing alike. Manziel is a running back who passes some. Fran was a passer who ran around a lot.
The QB that most reminded me of Tarkenton was Major Harris. His problem was he was black, and came along too soon for the NFL. He'd fit in an NFL offense perfectly today...
I remember the 1987 Penn State game, Major's freshman year. There was one play where he ran around in the backfield for 1:23 before getting off a long pass, which was completed for a TD. It was called back because an offensive lineman had run down the field about 20 yards, thinking Major had taken off running. But that play let everyone associated with WVU know that they had a player in the backfield. That play might have influenced Beano Cook's 1988 preseason pick, when he picked the Mountaineers to win the national championship...

Thats not how it works. Are schools and NCAA sued when a kid tears his ACL? Or gets a concussion? No. They sign waivers before playing. Just like in high school and little league.
