RE: Phillip Fulmer as a head coaching candidate?
These are exciting times to be a Buc fan. Imagine the conversations we are having now compared to a couple of years ago! If only for the short term to get the program going I think Coach Fulmer would shine a bright light on ETSU athletics from the get-go. And I also think he would do it for the normal mid-major salary we are capable of paying. He is already wealthy and I hope he would do it not for the pay but for the idea of taking a football program from nothing to be competitive in a few short years. That would help us greatly and polish his legacy a being a winner. In any event, I think we will have football soon and it is a bandwagon that will be fun to jump on!

RE: Phillip Fulmer as a head coaching candidate?
Money isn't an issue for Phillip. He was well paid at Tennessee during his tenure and buyout, and part of what led to his demise there was his lack of focus on football. He got into private business, real estate, investments and all that. Coming to ETSU to coach would be nothing but about football.
Also, Dr. Noland is following a script that's been discussed here for a long time. Outsider with local ties comes in. He spends the first year learning the lay of the land, holding hands and singing Kume Bye Ya, low and behold he's been here a year and we're talking about a new A.D. and a new Dean for the College of Medicine. Football is going to happen, there's no doubt. Too many ETSU people are retweeting articles about it, talking about it in a positive light. Now, the guy who we know wanted the UT job that Jimmy Cheek got is here at ETSU, he's got ties to alot of folks in and around Knoxville as well as the Tri-Cities.
It's what alot of us have been saying all along, you need people who have good relationships with local business owners and that people know who they are. You bring Fulmer in, you have instant credibility. He won't win every battle with UT fans, but he'll win some. Why pay 60-70 dollars a ticket, 30 dollars to park and spend 100 on gas to go watch UT struggle when you can go watch ETSU for 15-20 a ticket, park for free/5 bucks and get home in time to watch the Vols on the ESPNU 6pm kickoff.
I hope they go this route for the short term, but for the longterm bring in Billy Taylor to be the guy who has FCS experience and knows how it works at this level. Let Coach Fulmer do his thing for awhile, see where he takes ETSU knowing that Billy is there to take over when he goes.
I just hope Taylor doesn't bolt for Clarksville. Rick Christophel resigned last week.

I like the idea of Fulmer coming to ETSU. I really believe he will be to ETSU what Jerry Moore was to ASU (we all know what Jerry Moore did at ASU). I would suggest that Fulmer pick Jamey Chadwell as his OC/HC in waiting when Fulmer hangs it up for good.

Being on the "last train to Clarksville" is for the Monkeys. As I recall, APSU plays non scholarship football. Billy Taylor is a Buc. If he isn't loyal to ETSU....then let him go to Clarksville.

I think Fulmer has integrity...that is what made him popular with his colleagues. Johnny Majors was not. Johnny was known for going on profanity tirades where Fulmer treated people professionally. Majors was a hypocrite...smoking away while telling his players not to do that.

Majors accused Fulmer of stabbing him in the back. Fact is the administration was aware of Majors abuse. That's what led to his downfall...that and a lousy record.

This scenario reminds me of Bartow....only not as severe.

Two different programs but I think Fulmer is just the one to deal with all the issues that will arise getting football started again. I hope Noland is talking to Phil and this becomes a done deal! I don't think this would cause a rift between the two schools. Most in the Tennessee program like Phil. It's win win all the way. Hire Phil now!

people in Knoxville rarely talk about ETSU..they are very consumed with the Vols. With that being said, I don't think it would cause a rift between the two schools because we don't even play them and we are not in the SEC. If anything, I think it would strengthen the relationship between the two schools to the point where maybe they'd play us for an exhibition, out of conference, or "money" game.

Peay added scholarships and rejoined the OVC in football a few years back. He may be an ETSU guy, but he's gotta work too. I can't imagine that APSU didn't atleast call him, but he'd be crazy to take it.
Majors was a dying breed and just wouldn't change. The sad thing was they offered him a legit position in the athletic department that would've led to him probably becoming the A.D. at some point. Would've been interesting, a whole new group of people learning not to accidentally grab his Gatorade bottle.

He'd do it for the "normal" salary of an FCS coach because he's not worried about his salary. It's having the title of "Head Coach" beside your name to counts to most of these guys. That's how you get guys to take pay cuts from BCS-level assistant coach salaries to take lower FBS Head jobs.

People might want to keep watching this whole "UT Circle" thing that keeps popping up. Football Foundation meets with the Governor, ETSU hires a UT runner-up and graduate, UT donors (Ball and Powell) also large donors at ETSU, Fulmer says he's interested in ETSU football... it's the circle of life. If we pull a new AD from the UT ranks, it will be the UT-Northeast Annex. :discoaintdead: If you can't beat 'em, go hire all their guys and become more like them.

I think watching Mr. Ball would be a great thing to do, very deep pockets and not as connected to UT as he used to be. Murray has done an excellent job in the "friendraising" with Mr. Ball and other local donors who are ready to step up and help, which probably includes writing the check to get out of the ASun.

Considering the shape of UT football today, I don't know if I want to be more like them.

Are you saying Murry Bartow has done an excellent job "friendraising" with Ball?

Some of the comments on the JC Press site for this article are just unbelievable.

Bringing football back to E.T.S.U. would kill the school. People go to that school for an education and already have to pay a high cost to do that. That 15,000+ student body they have now would drop to nearly half as people take their money else where.

Fan1- I am telling you, the one thing, perhaps the only thing, that can kill the revival of ETSU football and/or the growth of ETSU sports is community apathy.

It's not a great sports town to begin with as we all know. Now, you combine that with the fact for the last 10 years we've heard nothing coming from ETSU but we can't have football or be in a real conference, and the fact the media has just gone along with it (I believe the cartoon in the Press the other day was the first time in a decade the paper has ever been critical of Mullins), and you will natually have a populace that will be less than enthused about the return of football to ETSU.

Now, I'm not saying it won't come back. I'm not saying ETSU won't join a better conference.

But I am saying that if these things are announced, be prepared for there to be a lot of Static Eyes that have to be won over for this to succeed.

Eh let em talk. A former ETSU coach told me recently that "Paul Stanton is a genius, because he was able to brainwash an entire community".

Those days are over.

I can't disagree more about Tri-Cities being a poor sports community. Look at high school attendance, Bristol Motor Speedway and early 90s ETSU attendance....When there is a good product....Tri-Cities supports. These fans travel...they poor out of the hills and head to Knoxville and Blacksburg. It's ETSUs job to keep these people home and to make them true Bucs. It's gonna happen.

The Wadood/Fields years had great attendance as well. Since then attendance has dwindled to the pitiful level that it is now. Is it the Asun matchups? Is it the poor product on the floor? Is it Bartow?

Yep, Yep and Yep

I know.Noland and Sander seriously need to get rid of the Stanton/Mullins mentality NOW!

I don't mean to hate on any professors here but there are some in the teaching profession who will go well out of their way to protest the conventionally popular sports such as football simply because it's popular. I can think of a few professors who preached it in their classrooms during the whole voting process for footballs return.

Wait, Stanton investigated that and found no evidence of professors trying to influence the vote, right? Surely the man would not have lied about that.

Well my sociology professor went on that rant every day. I think that her name was krembule-garner or something like that. Lady had it out for football as well as anything else that had to do with our society.

its because they think that it will dip in to their $$$ and the academic side of the university...yet you don't hear them complain about the other sports. I guess its only the football budget that they feel threatened by.
