Report: Big East is near TV deal with CBS, ESPN
At long last the LUCRATIVE TV contract is finally upon us! (sarcasm) Boy, how things have changed. Once upon a time, this was the deal that was going to "save the conference".

Report: Big East is near TV deal with CBS, ESPN

While the more-intriguing Catholic 7 continues to quietly get its ducks in a row and figure out which teams will join its league, the remaining posse in the Big East is close to closing a television deal. This news comes according to a report from reliable realignment info man Mark Blaudschun via everyone's favorite sports site that sounds like a Sopranos spin-off: ajerseyguy.com.

The Big East is reported to be nearing negotiations' end with CBS and ESPN. This makes sense given that Big East commissioner Mike Aresco left CBS last year to take over a Big East that was desperate for leadership.

And ever since Aresco has been there, you've seen what a war zone the league has remained (see: the break-off of the Catholic 7).

Here are the details, which are a bit quirky, from the linked report above.

Aresco and the Big East are close to finalizing a one-year deal in basketball using an 18-team model, which includes the Catholic 7 group of Big East schools who are expected to leave the conference following the 2013-2014 season and schools who are leaving for other conferences such as Notre Dame and Louisville (ACC) and Rutgers (Big Ten).

The package will include ESPN's Big East Big Monday time slots, the Big East tournament and a select games on CBS during the regular season.

In football, Aresco is selling a package of 10 teams for next season and 11 for 2014 and 12 for 2015. Aresco remains confident that the money for both sports will be “reasonable."

The details/terms of the deal have not been floated out there yet, so we're not sure what the remaining Big East programs stand to make and how long a commitment the networks will sign to in an ongoing climate of conference instability. And football, naturally, is a catalyst in all this as well. Whenever the deal gets done and the numbers become known, it will be interesting to see how much football drives the price compared to Big East basketball, which has undeniably suffered a massive downgrade.

A report from earlier this month noted the obvious primary motive for the Catholic 7's departure: a big payday awaits. Will those schools stand to make more than the reps from the Big East? We should have our answer in the near future.

It will probably be similar to the one they signed years ago. Time to beg, run & steal to get out of the BE. Its a shame, because I enjoyed the old big east.

Maybe we should wait to see what the deal points are. If it is similar to what all sports members are getting paid now that is pretty good considering that Syracuse-Pitt are gone, and Ville-Rutgers are gone the year after next.

The pending TV deal for the BE was one of the reasons why I was OK with the C7/MWC rumors that were floating out there. C7 has been reported to make up to $5M per team. You throw in a $1M from the MWC for football and you are up to $6M. Not sure anyone is going to pay anything close to that for Tulane, ECU and co. I am also guessing the exposure for the C7 schools will be pretty good--- nationally televised games on FOX, CBS, etc. NBE is going to struggle to find coverage--- who wants to watch Tulane play Temple in football or ECU/USF in basketball?

This deal is a one year deal for 18 team basketball league that will include the C7, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Louisville, Memphis, Temple, UCF, USF, Houston, SMU, Cincinnati, and UConn. That is going to be one heck of a conference next season.

The TV deals after that is anybody guess. I still think upwards to 7 to 8 million is possible for the years UC and UConn are still around. The conference overall might be blah but UConn, Cincinnati, Navy, and Houston are still strong brands. Memphis and Temple are solid basketball brands too. TV deal probably hits rock bottom once schools leave but as long as the stronger names are in it a reasonable tv deal probably is in the 5 million to 7 million range. Remember UC also gets exit fee money from all the school that leave.

I think the money should be good enough to keep UC afloat until the Big 12 gets into the expansion game again. I am not counting on the B1G moving past 14 anytime soon.

The BE commish has not used the word reasonable in any way so far. He is downgrading expectations.

It will be pretty good against the MAC type conferences, but trying to compete at the level UC has done the past 6 years will be extremely tough. Good luck ever keeping a coach.

I am still optimistic that there will be some movement and UC will
have a shot at another conference.

Aresco has used the word "fair" and "reasonable" but it also has been in context of the 6th best conference. In my view that slots them below the ACC but above everyone else. Which is 5 million to 7 million range is my guess. Thats about half the ACC but ahead of the upper range Boise State will receive in the MWC and ahead of the C7 too.

This temporary contract will be a nice boost to Cincinnati's athletic budget for next fiscal year. Nice work by Aresco.

This is good news -- potentially dozens and dozens of extra dollars flowing into UC's budget.
