Practice vs. Games
You coaches out there will understand this reasoning. SOME players will change for the better being punished in practice by windsprints, pushups, etc. for their lack of effort, lack of concentration, or having a bad attitude. SOME will simply take their punishment, give a scowl to the coach (when the coach turns his back) and walk away without anything changing for the better.

But EVERY player reacts to sitting on the bench during a game. They will either change for the better or quit. The ones who quit will make the coaches' decision for them. In the long run that will be what is best for the PROGRAM, and not just for the current team. My hat is off to Coach Pastner. The current team got the W, a player has pledged to his teammates to make amends, and the PROGRAM is much better for it.

This post sure makes it seem that Tarik apparently has been disciplined in other ways. I didnt realize what a bad attitude he had.

You must have a case of the flu. Either that or the weather has gotten you down. You need a bottle of Arizona do cure your ills. It was 81 degrees here today. Keep warm and I hope you feel better Tanya. And please stay away from the dark side. Some say once you cross the line, you can never come back!

Only if that's what you WANT it to say.

Nothing in the original post points a finger at Tarik beyond what is public already.

Ok then what is the point of this? Clearly it was about the Tarik incident.
It said some players dont respond to being disciplined in practice and has to be benched in games. That is pretty clear to me. Tarik didnt respond to discipline in practice so had to be benched. I just had no idea Tarik was such a discipline problem.

The post does not specificaly indentify Black as receiving discipline (eg, wind sprints) that did not work. The post states that a player's behavior changes better by beaching than by any other method. The post does not indicate that Black has discipline problems beyond published reports.

The point is that people are still second guessing the decision to sit Tarik for one half. The OP points out that this is most often the most effective way to reach a player, and gives a hypothetical example. You added the extra part about failed attempts to discipline Tarik in practice and some imaginary history of poor attitude.

If it will make Tarik play better, I wouldn't have minded if he was benched for the whole game if need be. I didn't know he was this big of a problem either.

Coach told Tarik: do you want people to identify you from the media reports or for who you actually are? I have met him several times. Really nice/very polite/generous to the fans.

All players want to play...being forced to watch your teammates from the bench, when you know you can help (and more importantly, THEY know you could help if you got out of the doghouse) has to be frustrating. While the jury remains in deliberation on the ultimate effect of this move, hopefully it is a rewarding one for the rest of his career here.
