I don't know much about him, personally, but I've heard enough about him to be cautiously encouraged.

He's actually very pro UAB in all things. I think this would be a great choice.

Does he have to be aboved by UAT's board?

I still think that's just crazy that UAT's board has a say in your school. Thank goodness the FL schools dont have this kind of interference.

Break away from the Alabama System. University of Birmingham. Almost sounds "soccerish" to me.

we get the same type deal with our state. USM is one of 9 schools and Ole Miss use to (as far as I know still does) have one member of the college board that is there just for Ole Miss. His only purpose is to see that Ole Miss gets what Ole Miss wants and often it was/is at the expense of the other schools.

I don't think our situation in that regard is nearly as bad as UAB's. We got our on campus stadium, for example, and no one tried to make sure it was smaller than State's or Ole Miss's. UAB can't even get a little stadium out of their board. It just sucks for them... UAB deserves so much better.

Good Greif, How do you guys get anything done with that kind of interfence?

Amazing what USM has done W/L wise.

Not going to happen.

We'd want to take our hospital (read: ~75% of the UA System's revenue) with us.

There's one board for the UA system. Three campuses; UAB, UAH (Huntsville) and those idiots in Tuscaloosa.

The BoT is *ahem* a shade Tuscaloosa-centric.

And as far as board approval, it's pretty much a fait accompli. The goon squad of the BoT was on the search committee.

UAB DOES need a fighter, but we need a smart, careful one. Our last two presidents "Queen" Ann Reynolds locked horns with them and was run out of town. Carol Garrison was a university politics bare-knuckled street-brawler, oversaw remarkable growth in her tenure, and wanted that damn stadium. It's probably what got her run off.

Queen Ann needed to be run off.

The stadium didn't help Garrison's job security, but I'd put that a couple places down on the list. I suspect that the real career-ender was an inside job: whiny faculty members running to the Trustees because they didn't like her raising standards (like, producing actual research and teaching actual, not UNC-CH, classes). She ran off some deadwood, but others dug in to fight. Garrison's not a nice woman. I have a pretty strong dislike for her on a personal level. But she was right to take those steps, which are crucial to AAU status.
