O/T - MWC announces divisions and championship game
Just for LK and all those enamored with all things realignment related.
Mountain West Announces New Football and Basketball Scheduling Structures
Quote:The league's directors of athletics formed two football divisions based upon common geographic regions and traditional rivalries, while also creating the first Mountain West football championship game.
Teams will play five divisional games and three cross overs.
Mountain Division
Boise St.
Air Force
Colorado St.
New Mexico
Utah St.
Wyoming
West Division
Fresno St.
Hawaii
Nevada
San Diego St.
San Jose St.
UNLV
The Championship game will be at the location of the higher rated (BCS) team.
For Basketball, there will be no divisions. Men's and women's basketball will play an 18 game conference schedule with home and home series against eight opponents and two single games against other teams, rotated each year.

RE: O/T - MWC announces divisions and championship game
My takeaways from the MWC announcement:
-There doesn't look like there is a strong push to go beyond 12 teams in the MWC. I don't know why they would feel that its necessary unless they could package deal with BYU.
-I was wondering whether Boise State would go Mountian or West considering its location is further west than UNLV.
-Realignment could possibly wrap up as soon as a week if Tulsa heads to the BE, NMSU to CUSA and the C7 take Butler, Xavier, Creighton, Dayton, VCU as rumored.

I'm hearing St. Louis, not VCU for that last spot in the C7.

I would kind of like to see the MAC go this direction in hoops and lose the divisions. But as Torch said, it makes too much sense.

Either way....death to the A10.

Makes a lot of sense to do it like this, not some half a--ed Legends and Leaders setup like the Big Ten. I personally would've named the West into the Pacific (yeah, I know Nevada isn't on the coast), it seems a little awkward having one geographic and one descriptive name. Still, it's just like how the ACC names it, and it could've been a lot worse.

Mountain and Pacific make sense.
Aren't those also two time zones so there is precedence for that.

Is Hawaii staying in Big West for hoops? Or coming fully onboard in MWC?
You know who made out nicely in this? Utah State.

Both are geographic. And you see it's the Mountain West Conference, so there's a Mountain Division and a West Division. Simple but effective.
Now, if we could get a sensible nBE and southern states conference (that name is already taken by a NAIA conference ) it would be good to go.

The Championship game will be at the location of the higher rated (BCS) team.
Regional rivals, good division geography. BSU and SDSU's about-face back from the Big East salvaged at least one common sense action in college football.
And I like the championship game location determination. The regular season record got even more meaningful.
Kudos to MWC.

Lot better than playing in the nBE for the fans.

RE: O/T - MWC announces divisions and championship game
I think we can declare the MWC one of the winners in the realignment saga.
They came up with very good schools, the right size (12), good divisions, etc.
Sounds like a winner to me!!

They lost BYU and Utah. Not exactly their ideal result.

Attention, Commissioner Steinbrecher - this is the way to go for the MAC Championship!

...and TCU for that matter. Also, since Texas/A&M/OU/OSU didn't go to the Pac-10 and cause the demise of the Big 12, they weren't able to take in the potential orphans (Tech/Baylor/Colorado), which would've put the conference at almost ACC levels of football. They haven't been able to nab Houston/SMU either, so that's not ideal either. However, they strengthen slightly, going two steps forward and one step back in my opinion, which is a lot better than what the nBE and C-USA have had to deal with.

No, they went two steps backward, one forward. They rallied better than nBE and CUSA, and have in place a solid conference.
But, the MWC was a solid conference before, and arguably a better one than now. And I see no reason why they'd reach into E. Texas to expand. They're better off staying away from Hou and SMU.

Disagree. I like the neutral field. Not the best for attendance but good weather, under a dome with neither team getting the benefit of a home crowd. Under these rules KSU would have had home field, not sure how many points that would have been worth. Besides, a team going 4-0 with a weak OOC schedule could benefit over one that had a challenging schedule but went 3-1 or 2-2.
