Favorite ETSU Rivalries and which ones you'd like to see again!
What are some of your all-time favorite rivals for ETSU? Is there one that ranks #1 above all the others? I found this cool article on the ETSU/App State rivalry: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/11688...te-vs-etsu

App State holds the edge in the all time series 32-14-1

"ASU and ETSU began their rivalry as members of the old Smoky Mountain Conference. East Tennessee State claimed a 9-6 win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Nov. 28, 1928."

1. App State
2. UTC
3. CofC

And I don't know how big of a rival MTSU was, but I wish we could play each other more.

I would love to see an ETSU/MTSU rivalry restart....it makes sense because they both started at the same time, compete for students, and they are often compared against each other.

I know that haters are gonna hate on here but the one school that always stirred up some pretty fierce feelings for me was Belmont. Personally nothing would make me happier than to have Rick Byrd suck it on the court.. I freaking hated that team and always thought that we should be above the bruins.

Another thing that always made me hate Belmont was the fact that nobody could do anything to make the Byrd mad. I did quite a bit of pregaming once and was pretty well gone in the student section when I decided to wail on Rick calling him every name in the book before they took the court. Guy didn't say a single bad thing back to me... All he did was come over, shake my hand, and thank me for my passion. Nothing's made me madder in all my days. How does someone thank you for calling them a p u s s y?

Those aren't the only reasons either. Does anyone else remember the technical foul that kept us out of the NCAA tournament? I still think that call against swader was BS. Things like that make a Belmont rivalry legit.

Western KY is a good one...I'd love to see us play East Carolina too, even though they aren't in the SoCon anymore

I always liked playing Davidson. They were really dirty and these games were always physical. Tim Smith once told me that Davidson was the dirtiest group of guys he ever played against, and this was after he returned from several years in Europe.

1. C of C
2. Belmont
3. UTC
4. Davidson
5. MTSU

College of Charleston tops my list mainly because the many trips I made to Charleston for the SoCon tourney. They're fans were always so hateful and cocky. Cant stand them and loved beating them on their home court.

I'm with "Your my boy blue" in that Belmont is right up there at the top. I guess when a team beats you year in and year out, you develop a displeasure toward them. THere is nothing I would like to see more than for us to whoop Byrd and co. by about 20.

Well.....we do need murry to get his cherished 20-win seasons, so we would need to schedule them, say 15-18 times a year. Problem with that strategy is...Kennesaw would eventually adapt and change, and thus figure out a way to beat us, while we would never develop or evolve into a higher basketball state of being.

I truly feel sorry for you, Bunny. Really.

For you to fail to get the joke there, I realize what a humorless life you have led.

I don't feel angry at you. Just sad.

Now follow up with some pretentious, long winded drivel that insults me.

For fans who might not know, a few years back the local media that was sympathetic to ETSU's then-administration was trying to play up KSU and ETSU as a rivalry. It obviously didn't work out as planned. Hence the rather hilarious reference from Bucster.

Anyway, just one thing on rivalries. I am somewhat in favor not of trying to keep rivalries of the past but instead building ones to the future. It is my hope that past rivalries with the likes of Belmont and Appalachian will seem small in about 10 years.

Do you honestly think anyone in Huntington, WV yearns to play the old SoCon foes of yore?

???? *What* are you talking about? I not only *got* the joke, I added to it. You're way off on this one. Again. And yes, it was indeed a good one.

A good mix of old SoCon/OVC rivalries, but try to cultivate some with border state teams. Long term you hope ETSU executes all this stuff and moves to a level where Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Marshall and Troy become rivals again, but that's a long term vision.
I hope UT-C decides to grow with us.
