Maybe we can find a webcast tutorial on developing and implementing a 2 TE offensive attack complete with QB reads and progressions?

Luke missed 5 games with injuries, and Vance missed about 6 with a high ankle sprain and another injury. He was in a boot for weeks.

heh. I was looking for soccer uniforms and typed a misfortunate URL trying to find Dick's Sporting Goods. I fell for typing "tranny the owl" into google and got burned. No way am I googling "webcast tight ends".

More Day 2 reports are bubbling up. Sounds like VMcD had a few more drops day 2, but more and more scouts/analysts are being impressed by him:

Quote:6. Rice tight end Vance McDonald is another favorite of Mayock and Jeremiah. McDonald moves very well; Mayock think he has a chance to be dominant. His hands may be the only weakness that McDonald has.

Mayock is of course a pretty prominent figure on NFL Network.

RE: McDonald at Senior Bowl
Rob Rang blog (but a different author) on cbssports.com has McDonald as a riser, and his picture (in a Rice uniform) tops the article:

Quote:TE Vance McDonald, Rice (South Team)
With Travis Kelce pulling out of the Senior Bowl due to injury, the distinction of top tight end in Mobile is wide open, but Vance McDonald is making a strong case for the spot. He looks the part with broad shoulders, long arms (34.5 inch) and big hands (10 inch) to extend and pluck the ball out of the air. McDonald also looked aggressive during blocking drills, staying balanced through contact and flashing a finishing attitude. He did have some drops on Tuesday when trying to run before securing the grab, but for the most part, McDonald has been impressive this week and is making a strong case to be a top-100 pick in April.

RE: McDonald at Senior Bowl
McDonald has impressed at the practice sessions. This is NFP wrapping up with the 10 players who shined most:

Quote:5. Vance McDonald, TE, Rice (6041, 262 and 4.75 E): Although he did not show the elite playing speed of Rob Gronkowski this week, other than that he looked the part of the new wave of tight ends that are dominating in today’s NFL. Quick accelerating to full speed, he can get separation down the seam and has the hands to make the tough over the shoulder catch. Most impressive was McDonald’s smooth athleticism running routes, which helped him to create separation vs linebackers and safeties. He has the size and strength to be a better blocker than he is and will need to improve in this area to be more than just a receiving threat. I do not expect McDonald to be a first round pick, but he will hear his name called in the second or third round.

Includes a picture of him catching a pass against Memphis - I think last year's home game.

Sorry. My fault.

I went in a different/improper for the thread direction and Tomball pointed it out... so I deleted it... and as a mod, I also deleted it from his reply so as to not allow (at least at MY direction) the conversation to go the way I took it.

The HBU reference is out of frustration to a new Southland School.

RE: McDonald at Senior Bowl
More wisdom from NFP (though some of it echoes what they said before):

Quote: 3. Vance McDonald, TE, Rice, Senior (6041, 262 and 4.70 E): With nearly all the tight end talk centering around Zach Ertz and Tyler Eifert, McDonald was flying under the radar until he stood out in Mobile. Speaking with NFL personnel after the week in Mobile, there was clearly an excitement about McDonald’s ability to be a good match-up play-maker who could align in various spots to make plays catching the ball. Although he lacks top end speed, he displayed enough of everything else to have scouts tell me that he reminds them of Rob Gronkowski. A smooth athlete who ran good routes, McDonald displayed a sense/feel for knowing how to get open and the hands to reach out and pluck the ball. While he is not going to jump over Ertz and Eifert, scouts told us they would be surprised to see McDonald make it out of the second round of the Draft.

RE: McDonald at Senior Bowl
I think scouts could be in for a big surprise come the Combine. Most places have Vance's 40 estimated at around 4.80.

We heard time and again that he was one of the fastest players on the Rice team in testing. I'm thinking he comes in below 4.65 (faster than Gronk). I agree it'll be hard for him to pass Ertz and Eifert unless one really disappoints in testing, but with a strong combine showing like I'm expecting from Vance he could lock in a place as the 3rd TE off the board.

Are we going to start being know as TE-U soon?

Great assessment by Sloan. These are the type of coaches we must ensure that we are paying well.

I'm not in any position to judge which coaches are so deserving, but I agree 100% with the concept. Good position coaches and coordinators need to be paid a little extra (or promoted with the appropriate raises).

Most of them will eventually move elsewhere, but keeping them at Rice for as long as reasonable should be a priority. By the same token, I wouldn't be a fan of keeping an underperforming coach merely for the sake of stability and fear that a replacement might not be as good. I'm a little shocked that, at least as of now, no Rice coaches have moved elsewhere (by their choice or Coach Bailiff's). Were all Rice's coaches so good that there are no better options out there at any position?

Seeing McGuffie's results at the regional combine really makes me wish he could have showcased himself at the national combine. It also makes me all the more hopeful that McDonald really shines while he is there. Seems like Solomon had a solid combine last year, though I remember being a little surprised he didn't throw up a few more reps on the bench.

McDonald weighed in at the combine at a huge 6-4, 267lbs.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/vanc...id=2540215

TE drills/tests are tomorrow, live on NFL Network.

By comparison with some of the consensus Top TEs:

Stanford's Zach Ertz - 6-5, 249lbs

Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert - 6-5, 250lbs

Cincinnati's Travis Kelce - 6-5, 255lbs
