OT: Exceptions Made to Just Seniors in Senior Bowl
It was asked here if only seniors could play in the senior bowl & I thought that was the case, however an exception was made here:

http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index....ore_sports

I don't really have an issue with allowing juniors if they have graduated.

Not sure how this scenario hasn't come up before.

Noteworthy though is the fact that the execute director for the senior bowl also happens to be the gump's color analyst.

I'm sure that had quite a bit to do with it.

Since the Senior Bowl is essentially an NFL game, they are probably just adjusting their practice to the juniors now jumping to the NFL after a good year. If the junior "declares" for the NFL, why not use him?

So I guess that makes it the Junior-Senior Bowl.

Well, the thought is that they are seniors in the classroom.

Still interesting considering who was in charge of the change & who it benefited.

Then change the name.

"Senior" is defined by credit hour at most schools, not by "how many years I've been here". If he graduated, then by definition he was a senior for at least one semester.

The Senior Bowl and all other such all star post season games are obsolete and need to be ended. They initially wee designed so scouts could see players in one spot. This was before cable TV, Internet and Recruiting services. It was a chance for players to be discovered. Now every team is on TV multiple times a year and there are combines. The public isn't interested in these games. They need to go the way of the rotary telephone and VCR

Or potentially the Redshirt Sophomore-Junior-Senior Bowl presented by Vizio.

Since the NFL runs the Senior Bowl (for the most part) I guess they might not agree with you MB. Almost every scout for every team will be in Mobile this week. So I guess they think they can get a little more useful info on the players.

And the NFL was the "reason" that juniors were allowed in the game. Although I'm sure the fact that it will sell tickets might have pushed the change.

I have always read that the scouts grade the players during drills the week BEFORE the actual game, and may not even stay in town for the game itself. If that is true, it is likely to be true of the other "senior" games as well.

The "combines" grew out of the former practice of assigning players to various NFL team's scouts and then pooling the statistical information. This practice ended when a WR was timed on his home field at a phenomenal speed resulting in him being drafted very high and getting a big contract. When he reported to his team that summer he was timed much slower than the scouts had recorded. When the league checked, they found that the "home field" had been measured off at less than 100 yards by a good measure. No one had thought to check such a thing before, but it resulted in the origin of the combines where the NFL had total control of all stats..

Another benefit of the combines is that's how we find out a guy's true size. For example, the combines revealed to us that Roddy White is actually 6' 0-1/2", not 6'3", as listed in his college playing days, and Marvin Burdette is 5' 9-1/8", not 5' 11". (Needless to say, this happens with a lot of players, not just UAB players. This is just two guys that I remember that I had an interest in.)
