What is your football program's most painful de-commit ever?
ODU just lost Manvel HS wide receiver Carlos Thompson to Texas Tech. With national signing day fast approaching I'm asking what the most painful de-commit you can ever remember for your school? Knock on wood, etc., if you are superstitious I hope the timing of this question doesn't bother you.

I don't know if this qualifies but I would say the most painful recruiting loss was Marcus Dupree and then to get him later only to have the NCAA refuse to let him play.

I don't know if he was a decommit or not but I know it came down to Tulsa and Oklahoma State for Barry Sanders.

Another Tulsa fan might correct me, but i think Tyler Wilson was committed to Tulsa, then decommitting after either Beaver or Kinne came in. I think he committed to Arkansas State before Joining Arkansas. I might have him confused with someone else though.

Wilson committed to Tulsa but switched to Arkansas when Petrino offered. Sanders only offer was Tulsa until close to signing day (OSU). Wes Welker's only offer was Tulsa until a few days before signing with TT.

For UCF, Denard Robinson got the Mchigan offer really late when he was a UCF lock. We also had Stephen Hill committed at the same time and switched to GT

Here is a story I remember but I won't say for sure it happened. I remember friends of mine telling me that P.W. Underwood saw and was impressed with Walter Payton, but he refused to offer Walter a scholarship because the experience of dealing with situations caused by having Willy Heidleberg (sorry about the spelling) and he didn't want to go through it again. I know that Walter did not get a scholarship offer from USM, but I don't know why.

UAB thought that they were going to sign Jamie Winborn a few years ago only to find out that he decided to sign with Vandy on signing day.

Don't know if we have ever really lost big comits in football. I know it came down to Marshall and VA Tech for Eddie Royal. And it wasn't known who he was going to sign with until his LOI came in. At the time his brother Chris Royal was a JR at Marshall.

For basketball the last big guy we lost plays for the Miami Heat now. Dwayne Wade was a Marshall committment until Marquette came a long and took him away.

He didn't get the offer because during the game he turned around and outran the defender backwards to the endzone. Our coaches called it "hotdogging" at the time. Now they call it hall of fame material.

Well back in the 80's when Dave Radar was coach @ Tulsa.
2 future Heisman Trophy winners, RB Barry Sanders (OSU) & QB Andre Ware (Houston) had Tulsa listed as the only other school recruiting them & offering them a scholarship. Imagine IF TU could have had both Andre Ware & Barry Sanders in the same backfield, Wow!

I'm changing sports (typical Memphis fan, huh?)...but seemingly overnight we lost Xavier Henry, DeMarcus Cousins, and went from being the favorite for John Wall to being off the list altogether.

Walter came around at a time when very few schools in the south were welcoming black athletes. Walter also had family ties to Jackson State which was a powerhouse in the SWAC which was one of the dominant leagues in college football at the time due to segregation.Walter had an offer to Kansas but turned it down.

For Vick it was down to Syracuse and Virginia Tech. McNabb went all in trying to get Vick to come to SU.

Quote:Reamon, who had helped guide Brooks from Newport News to the University of Virginia, helped Michael with his SATs and helped him and his family choose between Syracuse University and Virginia Tech. Reamon favored Virginia Tech, where he felt better guidance was available under Frank Beamer, who promised to redshirt him and provide the freshman needed time to develop. Reamon sold Michael on the school's proximity to family and friends, and Vick chose to attend Virginia Tech.
