None of them. Because if they were never here helping, them not coming didn't really hurt anything.

I'm thinking long term that was a good thing for us.

freaking ouch. I didn't know the mike vick story. Heavens, the coulda-beens on that one. that could have changed everything for ecu.

I know we recruited him hard but I don't know if that was even true. Regardless we had David Garrard at the time anyway so it's not that huge of a loss really. The biggest commit we ever pissed away in any sport was far and away David West after Hamrick fired Dooley. They both went on to other places to win things like National titles and National Players of the Year.

The story I heard from Logan is that Michael Vick wanted to come here. But after we had a solid commit from Garrard we backed off and he looked else where. FWIW

Underwood saw and was impressed with Walter Payton, but he refused to offer Walter a scholarship because the experience of dealing with situations caused by having Willy Heidleberg (sorry about the spelling) and he didn't want to go through it again. I know that Walter did not get a scholarship offer from USM, but I don't know why.

Showboating. Fact. PW went to the final senior year game of Sweetness (Columbia, MS). At the time there was a single RB record he did not hold and was about 90 yards short. Columbia let the opponent score in a lopsided game. Opponent coach (last game of year - big rival school) didn't want to give up another record to Payton and instead of kicking off and letting the guy take a knee to give Payton the opportunity they kicked off about only 20 yards. Columbia up guy picked up the ball and retreated to about the 5 and took a knee. Hand-off Payton. Hand-off Payton......yada yada yada - Payton gets last standing HS RB record. On the run that resulted in a TD he spiked the ball and celebrated. Yes, a dead ball penalty but a dead ball penalty.

PW got up and said he wasn't giving a scholly to any showboatin' sumbitch.

That's the most popular story --- and according to a relative who could actually know the real story - that's what happened. I haven't a clue if it's true or not nor if my relative is just telling me that story 'cause it's a good story....but it's a much better tell than what was originally posted. Besides, Heidelberg ran roughshod over ole miss and Archie giving the black bears what Johnny Vaught said after the game was the worst loss he's ever endured. Vaught had a heart attack 3 days latter crediting said heart attack to the pains of that loss. PW would have liked that since he's a gruff old *^&*^r.

For Rice, it's a tie of sorts:

Johnny Manziel
2012 basketball (almost the entire returning team)

Cousins was a UAB commit. And then this happened:

He would have stayed a UAB commit if you'd have given him an out clause if Mike Davis left...

Surely you've heard there was more to that story... it isn't as simple as you try to make it out to be.

I know we were also in the final 3 for Andrew Luck and supposedly, someone in his immediate family is a Rice alum.

Mike Trout committed to ECU and Signed his LOI with ECU. Then the MLB draft came and the Angels Drafted him in the first round at number 27 or something. He chose to go pro instead of come to college. Its something that happens with alot of high prospects and the draft. Just think of what ECU baseball could have been to have that guy leading off for at least 3 years.

Southern Miss was really close to signing Huge Green the All-American DE at Pitt in the early 80's, It was down to Pitt and Southern Miss and Johnny Majors offered him at Pitt, Southern Miss was real close to having Reggie Collier, Marcus Dupree, Sammy Winder, Louis Lipps, Huge Green and Hanford Dixon on the same team!
