It was originally founded to serve the educational needs of returning WWII veterans. In 1949, the city transformed into a 2-year institution, becoming Charlotte College (also the origin of the nickname "49ers"). The school became a four-year institution in 1963.

Current Enrollment: ~26,000
For athletics purposes, the school is officially known as "Charlotte."

Some notable people:
Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers
Joe Posnanski (helluva sportswriter)
Chelsea Cooley (Miss USA 2005)
Kimberly Aiken (Miss America 1994)
Clay Aiken (sadly)
Ben Chavis (NAACP)

Some notable faculty:
Jamie Franki: designer of 2005 American Bison nickel, the forward facing nickel, and the Olympic Medal.
Blair Rudes: professor of linguistics that re-created the extinct language of Virginia Algonquian for the movie The New World.
Kathy Reichs: author and inspiration of the Fox show Bones

Baseball began playing in 1979. We have 5 conference championships, with 4 of them since 2007.

The Men's Golf team won 6 consecutive conference championship from 2006-2011, placing 3rd at Nationals in 2007 and 8th in 2008. Consensus #1 ranking in the fall of 2007. 9 consecutive NCAA tourneys.

The women's basketball team (off to a 12-4 start this year) has won 4 conference championships, most recently in 2009; and went to the WNIT final four last year. 10 straight post-season bids (NCAA or NIT).

The Women's Soccer team began play in 1994 and has 6 conference championships, with 4 of them coming since 2006.

Men's Indoor Track: 7 conference championships, including 6 since 2006.
Men's Outdoor Track: 4 conference championships, all since 2006.

Women's Indoor Track: 5 conference championships, all since 2006.
Women's Outdoor Track: 5 conference championships, all since 2006.

Men's Soccer: began in 1976. Lost the national championship game to UNC-CHeat in 2011 (got hosed, is more like it). Also made a College Cup appearance in 1996. 7 NCAA tournament appearances (all since 1991), with 5 conference tournament championships and 9 conference regular season championships.

Men's Basketball: began play in 1965 in the NAIA until 1970. Made the NCAA final four in 1977. 11 NCAA tournament appearances (10 between 1988-2005), 6 conference tournament championships, and 5 conference regular season championships. Notable coaches have included Lee Rose, longtime NBA coach and Jeff Mullins, NCAA A-A and NBA All-Star. Notable players include Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, Henry Williams, Demarco Johnson, Eddie Basden, Byron Dinkins, and Rodney White. The most meaningful retired jersey, to me, is Charles Hayward. One of the highest rated high school players to ever attend Charlotte (note, Michael Beasley decommitted and went to KSU, instead), Hayward lost his battle with leukemia while at Charlotte and never got to live up to his vast potential. Truly heartbreaking story to read about.

I knew there was something I liked about you guys.

That includes the Cotton Bowl victory with the famous tackle from the bench by Alabama on our Dicky Maegle. Heard from one of the players on that team that Jess Neely never swore, but when the Alabama player jumped off the bench to tackle Maegle he said "that son of a b*tch"

As a post script, when asked why he did it, the gump player said "I guess I had too much 'bama in me."

He went on to become a dentist in North Alabama, and was mortified by the whole thing, and cringed whenever anyone brought it up.

So, many years later, gump Harvey Updyke poisons the oaks at Toomer's Corner in Auburn, and said, "I'm like that football player, I guess I got too much 'bama in me."

Well, that player had passed away, and his widow wrote an op-ed to the Huntsville Times (IIRC) basically saying, in that polite, Christian, sweet southern little old lady way, "**** you, Harvey".

The clock had run out and USM was behind by a point or two, so our player threw an illegal pass. Back then, the game could not end on a penalty, so we got another play. We used it to kick the game-winning field goal.

This was in the mid-1980s, I think...

Tulane is old. We have lots of history. She's in New Orleans. We once rocked the SEC. Now we suck. The end.

John Heisman's final four years as a college football coach were at Rice (1924-27). His record was 14-18-3.

History of Florida Atlantic Univ.

I don't know how to post videos here, so I created a link to a YouTube video the school made a couple of years ago.

Some things that the video left out:
The old air field was a radar training facility during WWII and taught those on the Enola Gay before their mission to Japan
In the early 70's we were designated as an owl sanctuary by the Audubon Society. The air field (by then a small municipal airport) would scare off any predators the Burrowing Owl might have, hence the Burrowing Owls nickname. Although the campus is now much larger than it used to be, you can see many owls after sundown with their offspring.
In JFK's last speech (held in Tampa), he applauded Thomas Flemming for his efforts to create the public university, the first at it's time South of Gainesville. Flemming and the staff FAU had at them time sent JFK an invite to the opening ceremony, which was received the same day he was shot in Dallas. LBJ took his place at the ceremony.
The first Miami Dolphin cheerleaders were FAU cheerleaders. That pipeline still continues to this day.
All of the original dorms have been torn down for new large, modern towers.

As the video was made in 2011, here are some things that have changed since then:
President Obama started his campaign at FAU last Spring. Even though the administration insists that it was just another speech. I got to miss classes for a day, so I digress.
FAU's own Alfred Morris broke Miami's own Clinton Portis' the Washington Redskins record for most yards in a season... in just his rookie year.
Rusty Smith (I'm sure Memphis remembers him), was the first Owl to be drafted into the NFL. He was picked by Tennessee, and honestly hasn't done much since.

We have recently become known for students that have lost their minds during final reviews as well as a professor that lacks common sense.

Besides those two loonies, FAU is a great school, with nice (and hot) students, wise and helpful professors, and the nicest campus in the land. We're one mile away from the beach, which can be seen from the football stadium and some of the dorms. The city of Boca Raton is finally liking the idea of having a major university in it's city limits, and a revitalization project has started along the school's border. Towering apartment complexes have started going up, and new bars, clubs, and restaurants have opened for business along 20th St (soon t be renamed University St), all are a walking distance from the dorms and stadium.
If you want to get a sense of what FAU is like today, and where it will be in 5 years, think UCF 5 years ago, only with more palm trees and the night life is a couple blocks away.
