calling board IT's
When I try to watch videos on sites like Facebook or yahoo my computer crashes. It doesn't happen on youtube. Do I have a problem w/ my flash player or something and what can I do to fix the problem?

RE: calling board IT's
I'd be checking for Flash updates as well as video card driver updates.

RE: calling board IT's
I had a problem like that a while back, I had a bad sector on my hard drive and when the computer went to access the data in that sector it crashed. You can try to defrag to see if the data gets moved to s different sector, or maybe Norton Disk Doctor might fix it, or maybe you could uninstall and reinstall Flash.

I'm also wondering if this is a Java issue...

Check for the latest video driver from the ***gpu manufacturer's*** website. What kind of graphics chip do you have?

RE: calling board IT's
so i was checking my gmail account today and at the top of the page it said that my browser was out of date so i went to retrieve the latest (as i assumed the most fashionable version was available) firefox version thru their recommend site. i'm not very computer savvy as after the package downloaded i extracted files and i wasn't sure if anything happened. gmail assured me that my browser was still out of date after i restarted my machine. so i removed firefox thru the update manager or whatever it's called (on ubuntu) and then readded it. progress was stagnant for quite some time so i restarted the machine. and now i can't even get to the start menu. i have to use the internet explorer in the interim. i try searching on the webs, but i get so overwhelmed. help? tnx

When using a Linux distro, you are dependent upon the distro itself to maintain repositories of the software you use if you want it neatly managed for you.
I'm guessing you're using an out of date version of Ubuntu, one that no longer receives support beyond critical bug fixes. If old enough, even those will stop.
That is the difference between periodic release distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSe, etc) and so called "rolling release" distros (Linux Mint Debian Edition, Debian Unstable, Gentoo, Arch).
Post back with your Ubuntu version: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Checki...ntuVersion
If you are interested in rolling release ... I STRONGLY recommend LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition). If you already use Ubuntu ... it is quite similar.

RE: calling board IT's
i tried to type that i the command prompt and nothing. when i restarted the machine and tried ubuntu i get a grub terminal and this message: minimal bash-like line editing is supported. for the first word, tab lists possible command completions. anywhere else tab lists device or file completions.
i believe it's 3.14. though i'm not even sure i did that right. this was a few weeks back

If you have a thumb drive, external hard drive, or anything like that, you can use your Mint live CD to boot then read your old Ubuntu filesystem with that.

Remember to choose LMDE (Linux Mint Debian) so you can enjoy the goodness that is rolling release.
Agree with post above about thumb drive backup.
I am a bit confused about you saying Windows ... did you install Ubuntu INSIDE of Windows using the crazy Ubuntu installer that can do that?

yeah, i installed whatever version when i bought my laptop back in july '12 with a dual partition. i was going nowhere with, i think it was 12.04, so i uninstalled it without thinking about it too much. i was under the impression that with a fresh install all my data would transfer

Not quite the same, but you're probably better off for it. LM17 (based on Ubuntu 14.04) will be supported for a couple years and could be a little friendlier to a noobie than LMDE (based on Debian) depending on your hardware and if its supported right out of the box.

It is indeed different. LMDE is rolling release. LM17 is not.
You know, you could of just said something when I was in Ohio last month and it would have only cost you booze for me to put it on there.
