D.J. Stephens can make the NBA and here's why
I saw someone made a thread a while ago asking if Stephens at any pro chances. Like most of the people who saw the thread, I said good player but no chance.

Well I've changed my mind.

see this guy? His name is Jamario Moon, and he is literally the same exact basketball player as DJ Stephens except 3 inches taller and he has played 6 seasons in the NBA. Out of this world athleticism which helps him play good defense but has a poor shot. Granted, yes Stephens is shorter but he's a better shooter and probably defender than Moon so if he can continue to make shots on a consistent basis, that mixed with his out of this world athletic skills there is no doubt in my mind that he can get a shot at the NBA or at least the D-league/Summer.

What makes DJ a better defender? He sure as hell can block shots, but can he play defense in the NBA otherwise? He's at a serious height/weight/strength/quickness disadvantage. All he really has his his jumping and reach.

DJ may have a chance.

But do you realize how many more people could have made the NBA or and NFL quarterback IF they were 3 inches taller?

he definitely needs to make a run at it, but I figure he'll end up in the Globetrotters one day.

Again, straight out of d.j.'s mouth...he's not interested in the Globetrotters. Now, that doesn't mean he can't change his mind at some point.

DJ would get pushed around in the NBA. He can barely go 4 minutes at a time at the college level with his asthma. He weighs about 170-180. Can we please stop this nonsense and just appreciate the fact that he is a good college player? There is nobody on this team that will ever get significant minutes in the NBA except MAYBE Shaq. And there's nothing wrong with that.

RE: D.J. Stephens can make the NBA and here's why
DJ will never make a NBA team.

Of course, he will also...
...never play D1 basketball
...never get any playing time for the Tigers
...never be anything but a role player
...never be a starter for the Tigers
...never go back in a game after dislocating his shoulder
...never shoot 40% from 3pt
...never be the leading rebounder for us
...never be the leading shot blocker for us
...never be the 13th rated offensive player in the country

He continues to surprise and exceed every expectation that people have had of him. The very best thing is that he plays basketball like he likes it not because he wants to use it to further his career.

I really don't see how he could ever make a NBA team but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

3 inches is the difference between being able to guard a small forward and a power forward in the league. DJ will not be able to guard a power forward in the league.

I will put it to you this way...Give Tarik the ball in the post and put DJ on him...How many times does Tarik score. Almost everytime I would say.

DJ has to play the 3 in the league and in order to do so he has improve his handles and lateral movement.

Foreign league and/or Globetrotters would be terrific. The travel schedule for the latter is brutal, but he's a military kid who's probably not daunted by that prospect in the least. He's as grounded a college basketball player as I've ever met, while at the same time as amazing a "skywalker" as I've seen since David Thompson was freaking us all out back in the 70's. I want nothing but good things for that young man, as do we all.

Stephens will be the next Chris Anderson.

Minus the drug addictions.

Minus the neck tattoos.

Minus the mohawk (maybe).

DJ will get a shot to prove himself at least. IMHO, he's a long shot for the NBA, but will have a chance. Ultimately, I agree that it's MOST likely Globetrotting (whether based out of Harlem or playing for foreign teams) for him...but I will pull like hell for him to land and stick on a NBA squad.

Soon after d.j. graduates, he will have a wife and child to support. Although I know he will do whatever he needs to do in order to do that, his LAST option is to travel constantly and be away from his family.

Last night the Rice PA kept calling him "DJ Stevens." They also called Tarik everything from Tark to Tar-eek. Tiger fans were shouting corrective support to the guy throughout the night to no avail (does that word have an "e" at the end?).
