RE: OT: Notre Dame's Manti Te'o made up story about GF dying.
I agree Slant. At this point, Notre Dame should just play ignorant(which they probably are) and not ask any more questions. This has nothing to do with Notre Dame, and Te'o is going to be the one having to answer to this. Just a simple, we don't have any information on this subject, don't intend to waste our time looking into it, and we will have no further comment would have sufficed.

I'm not so sure: Notre Dame ran the Heisman campaign, Notre Dame orchestrated the media coverage, and Notre Dame was happy to have a heart-warming tragedy to market in the tradition of George Gipp (like, just how did Brent Musberger know the hot chick in the stands was the UAT QB's girl? From the UAT media people. They happily whored her, and Notre Dame was no doubt hot to whore this fake Polynesian chick in just the same way. Was this why he "killed" her - he couldn't produce her for the Heisman PR campaign?). Te'o, to date, has not made a dime off his football talent but Notre Dame and NBC most certainly have - and the weepy story of the dead girl helped boost those profits. Notre Dame marketed the **** out of the "dead" chick, like handing out 80,000 leis to fans. They took the money. They can take the heat, too.
It's not enough to market football any more - the marketing has to let us believe our heroes are good people. Lance Armstrong rode a bicycle fast, David Petraeus figured out it's easier to hire Shi'ite militia than fight them, Joe Paterno coached a lot of football wins. None of those accomplishments require that the person be good, just good at it.

The pathetic part is this sappy story was marketed then the idiots (Notre Dame and their mouthpiece) insults everybody's intelligence by denying.I loathe these so called "big boy" schools and their fawning propaganda ministers-Holtz,May,Herstriet.
RE: OT: Notre Dame's Manti Te'o made up story about GF dying.
I think the media is avoiding the main story. They and the public are focusing on the more salacious and gossipy part of the story - the mystery of the fake girlfriend. While interesting, it is a meaningless story. To me, the bigger story, and the one the media does not want to focus on is how did the all those reputable national reporters do all these stories on this fake story without any verification or source checking.

I'm sure it has to do w/ "journalism" today being more bloggers w/ Mass Comm degrees than true reporters w/ Literary or Journalism degrees & having to get the scoop on a story

I think it's more the triumph of aggregation over original reporting, and the 21st Century idea of "free information." If no one owns information, then no one's responsible for its veracity. Blame Wikipedia.
