I agree. I just don't see it as a gag as DogTracks has said.

That was my first thought.. makes a lot more sense than a guy in his position dating someone for that long and never meeting her.

He's a Heisman candidate, at Notre Dame. He could go into any bar or classroom or school club meeting and walk out with five, real life girlfriends. Why in the world would a kid like that settle for a girl he's never met across the country? I could see if you were Kip from Napolean Dynamite. I do not grasp how Manti Te'o would put himself in this position.

If he was gay, and just hiding the relationship, well that sucks he feels he needs to hide it, but at least it would seem reasonable. Maybe he makes a few simple lies offhand about a fake girlfriend to cover his boyfriend or why he doesn't hit on girls, and it just snowballs on him out of control and he can't stop it. That's the type of thing that would be understandable. And hell, even if he's not gay, that might be his best excuse at this point. At least people would have sympathy for him.

NO he cant...he is Mormon.

I think people do not have a enough understanding of Mormons and all the things they are not allowed to do.

So he can meet girls online, continually lie about meeting them in person, but he couldn't meet a nice girl in a class room? I clearly do not understand what it means to be Mormon.

Punch yourself in the nuts really hard and refuse the urge to drink to make the pain go away. Thats how it feels.

I was focused on the "bar" part.

Why? That's a very minor point to what I said. I mentioned the classroom and school clubs. If you take out bars, it doesn't take away from the point I made at all.

Not much. Still a first rounder. Last time I checked, NFL scouts don't just look at one game when it comes to watching film. Teo is still a legit NFL prospect. He handled Stanford over the years who had two first rounders on their O-line last year.

And since when do teams care about character? It's not like he's been arrested. He's just a complete dumb***.
Donte Stallworth killed a guy when he was drunk and was on the field shortly after. How many times has Pacman Jones been in jail? He's still playing. And then there's guys like Big Ben, Ray Lewis and Michael Vick. This list can go on for a long time.

All of these instances are not rookies. they are proven players worth the investment. with teo you have unproven talent at the NFL level. they are going to put him through a grinder to make sure he isn't a head case.

they dont to drop big money on a guy that is going to flake out beforehand.

Justin Blackmon - A top 5 pick drafted last year with a ton of character issues. Probably can add Dez Bryant to the list too. His stock did fall because his conceived character issues, but still a 1st rounder.

Rookie wage scale leaves the risk a lot less nowadays. Sure he might be grilled at the combine with questions, but what player isn't? Teams have 4 years of tapes on a guy, they'll have his combine numbers and that's where his draft stock will be based on. Not his character issues. If he was abusing women, and getting arrested constantly in college, he would plummet in the draft. That's not the case.

Outside of being sent to a mental institution or having a serious injury, he will still be a first rounder come April.

If it comes out that he totally fabricated this story with the intent of gaining sympathy (as suspected by Deadspin), I would be shocked if he is still gets drafted in the first round.

One of the funniest things I've read so far:

During the BCS championship I thought Manti Te'o was missing tackles. Now I realize he was just hugging his girlfriend...

his draft status will drop him th the 3rd round based on his BCS performance. This bizarre story will not preclude an NFL team from drafting him.

I'm full on in Deadspin's corner here.....IF he was embarrassed that he never actually met her to the point that he made up stories of their meetings, THEN WHY would you feel the need to publicly discuss it?! someone you LOVED that you never MET! I don't hear **** about any other college player's GF's unless they're hot and in the football stands!!! This thing doesn't pass the smell test whatsoever....

I hope Michael Vick is never asked to do a pooch punt.

I think the real tragedy here is that I thought we could finally stop hearing about Notre Dame for a while after the beat down they received from "Bama, but here they are on the front page again.

because its a gipper story. his heisman run didn't start until he had a standout game and had to overcome adversity. He's a good player, but as a defensive player, to get noticed for the heisman, he'd have to have a side story that would interest the media and make him a "fine, upstanding citizen" he was a devote mormon. check. great player: check. just need a love interest and he was media gold.

Again, both of those guys are offensive players. they have more worth.

Agreed Happy Husky....all for fame and publicity...I'd actually really enjoy this story if Te'o went on PTI, smiled and said "Hey, I did what I could to get the media pub"

I'm not sure why people care about this at all, or why they need a ridiculous narrative to enjoy sports. I didn't care about Te'o's story before, and I don't care now that it's been revealed as a fraud.

He's a little pathetic and desperate to get "good guy" attention....I'm sure a lot "good guys" do stuff like this, maybe not to this scale, of course.

Because people love good stories. This is a great story (not in the uplifting sense, but in the sense that its entertaining/interesting).

People need to quit acting like sports is anything but pure entertainment anyways.....just like movies, theater, or music. There is no higher purpose to football.

Exactly. Sports are occupied by people, and people can often be selfish, bad and lie.

I imagine some people (idiots) are just having the WORST sports week ever!
