If he is, I hope that prompts a very real discussion about homophobia in the locker room and what it causes people to do to hide their sexuality.

Not much. Still a first rounder. Last time I checked, NFL scouts don't just look at one game when it comes to watching film. Teo is still a legit NFL prospect. He handled Stanford over the years who had two first rounders on their O-line last year.

And since when do teams care about character? It's not like he's been arrested. He's just a complete dumb***.
Donte Stallworth killed a guy when he was drunk and was on the field shortly after. How many times has Pacman Jones been in jail? He's still playing. And then there's guys like Big Ben, Ray Lewis and Michael Vick. This list can go on for a long time.

The good news here is, now that Lanay isn't dead, maybe he can actually meet her!! Who knows, they might really hit it off!!

(reminds me of the old joke : "besides that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?")

And short of shooting himself in the foot in the locker room with a gun he has no permit for, this type of stuff won't matter much to his draft stock.

All of these instances are not rookies. they are proven players worth the investment. with teo you have unproven talent at the NFL level. they are going to put him through a grinder to make sure he isn't a head case.

they dont to drop big money on a guy that is going to flake out beforehand.

I don't know. If he was hiding his true sexuality behind a make believe girlfriend, why did he concoct the story of her death?

Doesn't have to deal with keeping the story going. Makes sure everyone knows he had a girlfriend but she died. It's the perfect cover.

Plus the "playing for someone who isn't here" is a story that the general public laps up. its a gipper story. any additional attention, esp during a senior year heisman run is pure gold. who is going to vote against a guy who's grandma and "girlfriend" died on the same day when he still went out and played his heart out? obviously he didn't win the heisman, but he didn't reveal it was a hoax until after the voting was in.

Well, one possible explanation could be that people were starting to get suspicious. After three years of a long distance relationship, and the families' accounts of her visits to Hawai'i, etc., people would probably wonder why there are no photos or sightings of them together. You could even have begun seeing offers by boosters, media, etc. offering to fly her out for some of Notre Dame's games. The charade was getting harder and harder to cover up, so they may just have felt that making it seem as though she passed away would be an easy way out, as well as offering the added benefit of Te'o citing his continued grief over her loss as a reason that he has not resumed dating.

I agree with others that Te'o may be gay, and this was just a beard initially intended to get people to stop speculaating about his sexuality. But the facade eventually just got unmanageable.

Plausible, but if you wanted to hide your orientation and sweep it under the rug, wouldn't he just quickly and vaguely say "I'm dating a girl out in California" and be done with it? Move off the subject as quickly as possible? Instead, creating a full name, school, an accident, melodrama and leukemia death invites the red-hot spotlight.

It's the same thing as any lie. It could have just started as an off hand comment, but when you lie you have to lie to cover you lie and then lie on top of that.

Perhaps people pressed him for details. I don't know.

I have an interesting twist that directly impacts us. Assuming that Te'o received the majority of his Heisman votes from Midwest voters which most would vote for the local guy, if you take those votes away and they still vote for the local guy. Where does Jordan Lynch end up in the voting?

My guess is Lynch may have been cheated out of the Heisman Trophy!

Maybe a trip to NY (which would have been big in itself) but not the ACTUAL trophy.

I agree. I just don't see it as a gag as DogTracks has said.

That was my first thought.. makes a lot more sense than a guy in his position dating someone for that long and never meeting her.

He's a Heisman candidate, at Notre Dame. He could go into any bar or classroom or school club meeting and walk out with five, real life girlfriends. Why in the world would a kid like that settle for a girl he's never met across the country? I could see if you were Kip from Napolean Dynamite. I do not grasp how Manti Te'o would put himself in this position.

If he was gay, and just hiding the relationship, well that sucks he feels he needs to hide it, but at least it would seem reasonable. Maybe he makes a few simple lies offhand about a fake girlfriend to cover his boyfriend or why he doesn't hit on girls, and it just snowballs on him out of control and he can't stop it. That's the type of thing that would be understandable. And hell, even if he's not gay, that might be his best excuse at this point. At least people would have sympathy for him.

NO he cant...he is Mormon.

I think people do not have a enough understanding of Mormons and all the things they are not allowed to do.

So he can meet girls online, continually lie about meeting them in person, but he couldn't meet a nice girl in a class room? I clearly do not understand what it means to be Mormon.
