San Diego State Rejoins MWC

San Diego State is expected to be reinstated as a member of the Mountain West Conference as soon as Wednesday afternoon, according to industry sources.

The Aztecs were scheduled to join the Big East on July 1 as a football-only member and the Big West in all other sports, but instead, it will remain a member of the Mountain West in all sports.

San Diego State's decision to remain in the MWC comes on the heels of Boise State's Dec. 31 decision to remain in the MWC and not join the Big East as a football-only member.

As part of Boise State's contract to remain in the Mountain West, obtained by ESPN, MWC presidents had to set the terms of SDSU's return and present an offer to the school before moving on to other schools. The "right of first option" in the contract would have expired Jan. 31, after which time the conference could have attempted to invite other schools or stand pat with its current membership.

On Jan. 8 in Miami, MWC commissioner Craig Thompson told ESPN his league presidents must vote by a 3/4 majority to approve San Diego State's return to the league.

Because Boise State changed its mind about joining the Big East, the Aztecs will not have to pay an exit fee to leave the Big East. In SDSU's contract with the Big East, the Aztecs' exit fee is withdrawn if there was not another Big East member located west of the Rocky Mountains.

When Boise State announced Dec. 31 it wasn't joining the Big East, San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk said the Broncos' decision "represents a significant change in conference realignment."

With SDSU remaining in the league, the MWC will have 12 football members this fall -- Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming.

We will play Houston and SMU, or Temple.

If @Patrick_Magee is correct about FAU & MTSU joining C-USA for 2013, that could pave way for ECU/Tulane early entry to Big East

I doubt adding ECU/Tulane early adds to the bottom line-- especially when you consider they would want the conference to pay for early exit fees.

BE should just go round robin in 2013. Let's play 8 OOC games and each team will skip one team for a year.

Any idea what those fees might be? At least Aresco knows who he has for TV purposes.
