Marquette's AD speaks
Interesting:
http://marquettetribune.org/2013/01/15/n...lic-seven/

hopes to leave by 7/1/13!

In recent weeks, universities such as Gonzaga, Dayton, Virginia Commonwealth and St. Louis have been reported as good fits for the Catholic Seven’s specifications. Additionally, Williams mentioned Xavier and Butler by name as particularly logical potential members.

He also did not rule out the possibility of including non-Catholic and public schools (such as Butler), as long as their athletic programs fit the bill.

“I don’t think religious affiliation, historic or current, will be determinative of someone’s fit in the conference,” Williams said. “One need not be religiously affiliated to be committed to excellence.”

However, Williams did all but dispel the rumors regarding the inclusion of Connecticut and Cincinnati, as both universities have Division I FBS football programs. Since the Catholic Seven’s conference will likely be composed of non-football schools, Connecticut and Cincinnati would likely need to play football as independents if they were to join.

“I don’t think it’s a logical assumption that those schools would be a part of our group,” Williams said

“We’re really starting anew, and that’s really exciting because not many schools have been able to do that,” he said. “We’re able to write our history and control our destiny, and that’s the most exciting thing about this.”

One tea leaf indicator that we're not getting the name. (Sad face.)

I think reading the tea leaves as well-
Just saw that MTSU and FAU will be in CUSA for '13-'14.
Likely means ECU and Tulane will be in the NBE for '13-'14.

I think the odds are at least 50/50, if not closer to 75/25, that we see the split for the '13-'14 season.... I think we see everything finalized by 6 weeks from tomorrow(2/28).

I don't read into it that deeply. I think the whole concept of haveing a conference not beholden to FB (which both hybrid CUSA and hybrid BE were) is the starting anew and exciting part. All of the C7, whether BE or CUSA, have had FB dictate things since the early 90s. I think his excitement point is about a group of schools in a committed hoops league not being controlled by FB.

You believe correct! I was just noting that non-Catholic/religious and public was mentioned. By my count, the only names Williams has ever dropped in the context of additions to the C7 have been X, Butler and VCU....

I think we'll arrange to get the Big East name. If not, just name it the "Gavitt Conference", and it will have the same strength.
04-cheers
I would recommend also the "Carnesecca Conference" or the "Thompson Conference" ("Al McGuire Conference" would be cool, but he never coached in the league), but it would be impossible to choose one or the other.

Assuming VCU gets an invite, I vote NüEast. Re-brand the whole thing with a slick, minimalist Bauhaus-type feel that exudes ruthless efficiency.

I like the Carnesseca conference! Also McGuire played for the Johnnies.

Once again I like it. 2 divisions named after St. John's greats.
