For you non hockey guys, NCAA hockey has a formula (unlike basketball) that determines who gets in the tourney, known as the pairwise rankings (PWR) which is the # you will see. A tie in the PWR is broken by using the team RPI.

This week’s brackets

West Regional (Grand Rapids)
13 Massachusetts-Lowell vs. 4 Minnesota
11 Western Michigan vs. 7 North Dakota

Midwest Regional (Toledo)
15 Minnesota State vs. 3 Quinnipiac
12 Dartmouth vs. 6 Notre Dame

Northeast Regional (Manchester)
16 Colgate vs. 1 New Hampshire
9 Yale vs. 8 Denver

East Regional (Providence)
14 Niagara vs. 2 Boston College
10 Miami vs. 5 Boston University

Unranked UMass went to Boston College last night and beat the #2 team. 5-2

RE: OT - BGSU takes out CCHA #1 and NCAA #5 Notre Dame
Something really unusual this week and I would call it a very beautiful thing. Looking at he current CCHA standings, in an 11 team league Michiigan State and Michigan are holding down the 10th and 11th spots. At the other end of the standing, Notre Dame and Western are tied for first and Miami is a single point behind. Miami has two game series coming up with both Western and ND. 3 of those games are in Oxford, but we gave up one of our home games with ND to play the game in an outdoor DH at Soldier Field. Wisconsin and Minnesota are the other half of that DH.

Can't agree more that seeing Michigan and Michigan State at the bottom is a beautiful thing.

WMU gets Michigan at home for 2 this weekend. 05-mafia We have ND coming to the Zoo for a pair in late February. Already beat them once.

One correction - Miami plays 2 at WMU on Feb. 8 and 9.

Western holds serve at home and sweeps Michigan, Miami holds serve at home and sweeps BG. Notre Dame splits with Ferris St. and drops from a 1st place tie to 4th in one weekend.

Always great to beat Michigan and sweeping them is even nicer. WMU takes 3 of 4 from them this season. 04-cheers

CCHA Standings

WMU 39
Miami 38
Ferris St. 34
Notre Dame 33
Alaska 31
Ohio St. 31

2 MAC teams on top, 2 B1g teams on bottom! Miami # 3 in the nation Pairwise rankings (and that is what the tourney is based off of).

Oops. I have season tickets to mens and womens basketball and hockey and did not look that up, I guess I got in confused with
Western visiting in bball next week. I WISH both games were in Oxford.

Miami made a big jump from #8 to #4 in the pairwise rankings this week. If we can somehow stay in the top 4, it would get us a spot as the top seeded team in the Toledo regional, which would give us a chance to get at least a couple thousand fans up to the regionals. Last time we got that advantage 3 years ago at Ft. Wayne it helped us advance to the Frozen Four. All other years we have had to travel a thousand miles or so and have had little fan support.

That would be great if you could get in Toledo. We are crossing our fingers for the grand rapids regional... I can't imagine how crazy that place will be if WMU is playing 30 minutes from campus.

One things for sure, the Big Ten is going to suck next year in hockey.

I wonder if it'll be the Big 2 (Wisconsin, Minnesota) and the Little 4.

For Michigan, it'll be just like RichRod-era football. They'll have their one or two years of stinking it up, and then they'll be right back near/at the top, unfortunately.

Whats the word on Western Michigan and Michigan going forward after realignment?
Miami tried to continue to schedule michigan and Red the Michigan coach said he refused to play at our barn and would only play us if we travelled to Ann Arbor to give them home ice. We refused of course and wont play michigan next year or any other year.

Michigan only has 5 conference opponents so if they keep that up the fans will get to see each big team like 8 times just to fill out their schedule. Not to mention if they start ducking quality opponents, that SOS and their Pairwise will be in the toilet.

That pretty interesting on the scUM thing with you guys. No word yet on any OOC agreements moving forward for us, but I'd love to have it be mostly "old CCHA" schools. I know our new league will be top notch, but I'm going to miss the regional rivals.

And with the uptick in travel costs for the conference games, it'd just make sense approaching a Ferris State for a series over a Merrimack.

That's exactly why BG should have gone independent, instead of joining the WCHA.

Plenty of former CCHA rivals they could have scheduled b/c the new leagues are smaller and there are even more open dates. Never mind that most of the universities would jump at the chance to keep travel costs low.

Sign long term agreements, and BG could give it a go for 4+ years. See what the landscape is like at that point.

Theres no doubt Miami and WMU will continue to play BG every year. I wouldnt mind Miami getting UMass on the schedule too as they are out conference step-brothers now.

I worked the numbers last year. I assumed Miami and ZSU would play BG every year H/A, and WMU would at least alternate. Using what I thought were very conservative estimates, BG could easily fill up a schedule w/ less travel and more interest than joining WCHA.

Of course those were estimates, they were assumptions. They could be wrong. For example, the Big 10 could look to destroy midwest hockey competition, and that would make it hard on BG. But I don't think they will, most don't want to see the sport shrink.

In the end, working the numbers made it pretty clear that the WCHA wasn't a good choice for BG.

I caught a snippet of Penn State versus MSU friday night. I was expecting a horrible looking Penn State team...but they were actually pretty quick and ended up beating MSU at Munn...which is never easy even against the worst MSU teams.

PSU also has a couple more wins against historically decent programs.

I was surprised.

Main advantage for BG in WCHA is the autobid for the tourney and guaranteed schedule. Although if your pairwise is good enough, you'd get in anyways. The B1G hockey has to play nice to some degree for the time being as they are a bit weak, but you can count on them throwing their weight around when a few more big programs join (like Illinois and Nebraska). Michigan Hockey already thinks it is Michigan Football and getting pushy.

I'd like to see a MAC Classic tourney annually with Umass, BG, WMU, Miami

And my assessment says the schedule is not an advantage. The autobid is...but like you say, be good enough and that will get taken care of.

Joining the WCHA was CYA for the AD. It was an easy thing to sell as "making sense". But it isn't in the program's best interest.

Would love to see MAC hockey. But yeah, a weekend like that would be fun.

Unfortunately, I heard that while we will continue to play BG, it will not be every year. I don't know why. It sounds like the only school that we will play every year nonleague will be OSU.
