This is really to lure an NFL team. UNLV is just the named reason (don't get me wrong, UNLV will use it as well).

From what I heard in a few sources, it will be an on-campus stadium (hence the name UNLV Sports Center or whatever), so I imagine UNLV would get a major cut of any NFL teams that would be renting it. It looks... like it would instantly be the best college football stadium in America...?

If by "best" you mean newest and most expensive, then yes.

But I'd wager that the folks at the Big House in Michigan, the Horeshoe in Columbus, South Bend and (it pains me to say it) Baton Rouge, would take issue with that statement.

They have to be banking on events as means of income. They might be even looking to put in a bid for the Super Bowl one year. While it was a down year, UNLV only averaged 15,208 people a game this past season in football. This stadium makes zero sense strictly from an UNLV football perspective.

Las Vegas is running out of water and money. The unemployment rate is around 11.5%! It's just wishful thinking.

Minimum seating capacity for the Superbowl according to the NFL is 70,000. Could theoretically host an NFL team, though.

Jan 2015 Super Bowl is in Glendale, AZ (63,400)

Besides this is in the proposal stage. Proposals change. There is a proposal (one of four) right now to redevelop the area between Turner Field and the State Capitol Complex here in Atlanta that would mean a stadium for GSU. Proposals are just hot air and pretty pictures until someone chooses it and say "Ok,lets see your plan".

Pac-12 bid anyone? They'll at least get the Pac-12 Championship game, the MWC Championship game, a Super Bowl, major concerts. Vegas has needed a venue like this for some time.

I know USA basketball plays most of their exhibition games at UNLV's basketball arena (Thomas and Mack Center) so an all sports arena seems like a logical idea

I think there's some resentment between the state of Nevada and the state of California over who gets how much of the Colorado River. Right now, California has the population and the $$$'s, so California wins out. Later on, Nevada may get more muscle. I do know that the Colorado River is a bone of contention between the two.

RE: UNLV's proposed football stadium reno
Las Vegas lives in perpetual fear of losing the National Finals Rodeo and this addresses that.

I think NFL is least likely to land there. No one is getting a team until Los Angeles is taken care of there is some thinking in the NFL that no one gets a team until LA has teams in both the AFC and NFC. Of the ten largest tv markets NFC is in seven and the AFC is in four, with two of those shared with the NFC (remember those are bid independently even though the revenue is shared). There are 12 TV markets other than LA larger than Las Vegas.

I could see Las Vegas bidding on the new BCS title game and trying to upgrade the Las Vegas Bowl to a contract bowl or a high second tier bowl like CapOne.

I've never liked domes. Takes a lot of the challenge out of the game. But that's my personal opinion.

I'm thinking a day game in September or October to accomodate TV in Las Vegas might be deadly.
