Landon: Staff changes on Marshall’s football team raises a flag...
For any coach, the fourth year is a make-or-break proposition. But it’s particularly true for Holliday after Marshall’s very disappointing 5-7 season in 2011. That dropped his overall record at Marshall to 17-20.

So, under the circumstances, the last thing a coach needs heading into the all-important fourth year is instability on his coaching staff.

Yet, that’s exactly the case at Marshall.

I call B.S. on the notion that Petrino is or will be a hot commodity (which is posited in the article). We have precedent here. Neither MikePrice nor Game O'Lifey did quite so much wrong as Petrino. Both ended up at CUSA schools, acquitted themselves well, and retired there. Petrino did worse and fell farther. He also is a bit of a jerk.

Petrino toyed with the idea of going to USM but seems to have been rebuffed by our administration. We at USM all got a chance to really mull over what hiring Pet Rhino would mean, and the results were not good.

As for Marshall, I can see you guys getting it together next year. Changing assistants is a good way to raise the energy level without the trauma of firing the HC.

I do not think O'leary and Price comparisons are accurate. Both of those guys were in the twilight of their careers and neither of them had the high level of success that would interest schools in taking a chance on them. O'leary has had some success but has been way too inconsistent and we all know what happened with Price.

There is no doubt that if Petrino has success he will get another "Big" conference job.

The writer is a clown...because if Holliday, who's defense gave up more points this year than any other CUSA Team, DIDN'T change defensive coordinators and/or make any other changes, the clown would have written this column:

For any coach, the fourth year is a make-or-break proposition. But it’s particularly true for Holliday after Marshall’s very disappointing 5-7 season in 2011. That dropped his overall record at Marshall to 17-20.

So, under the circumstances, the last thing a coach needs heading into the all-important fourth year is his inability to know where the major weaknesses are on his staff and his complete failure to try and improve his staff following another losing season.

Yet, that’s exactly the case at Marshall.

Not to mention that fans were begging Fedora to make a staff change his 4th year. He did, and found a Defensive Co. that knew what he was doing. We went 12-2 the next year, won the conference champ game for the first time since it's beginning, came real close to a BCS bowl bid, and ended ranked in the polls.

Sometimes changing assistant coaches is exactly what is needed.

In our case this year with EJ, the entire staff needed to go, starting with the top guy.

It's Chuck Landon. He's the biggest clown in Huntington. He's a "beat writer", so he thinks his job is to stir sh*t. Add to that that he and Doc don't get along (putting it as nicely as possible), and these are the "stories" he puts out. His agenda is to have Herd fans hate Doc so that Doc will one day be fired. In reality, he is causing harm to the program, athletic department, and university. His "articles" have been cited by ESPN and then shown to be unfounded. There was also an instance lately where Landon claimed our recruiting class this year was subpar (far from the truth- we have 3 4-star kids coming in this year). Some recruits didn't like this, and voiced their displeasure. He's a hack. Don't pay attention.

It is true that both of those guys were about 5 years older when scandal hit them than Petrino was. Still, I don't see anyone bigger than WKU hiring him. Coaching is fickle. Jeff Tedford was the hottest thing going at one point. Amazingly, so was Jeff Bower. It doesn't last. And both GoL and that insufferable Mike Price went to multiple bowl games. Petrino might fall flat on his face. He might also not win games even if he doesn't drop his bike. He's never had to win on a $20 million budget before. He won in CUSA and the Big East with a huge budget.

Never, never, never pay any attention to anything written by Chuck Landon. He a local Huntington hack that has little respect from the Herd faithful.

Landon wrote the other day how bad our recruiting class was. Even though we have 3 4 Star players and most of our class have shut down their recruiting and not listening to anyone else. I used to read musports.com everyday. But when Landon went from the Charleston Daily Mail to the Huntington HD I quit reading it. I may look at it once or twice a week and then find myself just reading the headlines.

Landon has had a grudge ever since Snyder took over the program and banned him from press conferences. He never has anything good to say about the Herd, players or coaches.

Sounds like Charlotte's old beat writer.

He got pissed when we fired Bobby Lutz and now he just ***** on the program all the time on Twitter.

I did find it interesting you guys have had 5 S&C coaches in 4 years. ...don't know the whys, but they can't all be good.

For us, from '11 to '12, it is obvious how important a S&C coach is to teams that most likely won't have the depth akin to the higher tier programs...'12 obviously wasn't hired away. But this will be our 3rd HC in three years...never thought I would say that

The 1st SC coach everyone really liked. He is at BC with Addizo now. He will be the head of an SEC program in 5 years or less. The next 2 DOC and the SC didn't see eye to eye on how the prgram was suppose to run. They focused more on just weights and not any stamina training. Doc really like our last guy in Joe Midy. But I think Midy will one day run a big program too. He will bounce around building his resume.

As DOC said when he got here, he would rather have to replace people on the staff, rather than have the same staff year in and year out. If you have the same staff that means you aren't doing anything right.

I think thats true of any school no matter what the size. Tak a look at Aubun, When Chizik was there I think he only had 1 staff member leave the staff.
