FWIW - MT's average through the same time frame would place us at #4, with 5,004 per game.

What do these numbers mean?

Honestly, our numbers are higher than 3 of the 6 nBE invitees.

So what does it mean?

Charlotte- 5,604 would put us in 3rd. A couple of down games (attendance-wise, for our strong record) over the break. I expect that number to rise if we continue our strong play as people are back on campus and we're sitting at 14-2, etc.

If you read the title: "CUSA Basketball Attendance Rankings for 2012-2013 through Jan 12th", that would give you a pretty good hint as to what those numbers mean.

To this day, Memphis' numbers still impress me. Their bball outdraws some of the CUSA/NBE fball teams.

Ding!

I've done it for at least the last few seasons...no clue it ever had any "meaning" other than just posting a certain ranking/info.

The years that impressed me most were our last in the Mid South Coliseum and our first in the Pyramid. The Coliseum only held 13000 and change but was LOUD LOUD LOUD. The first year of the Pyramid was Penny Hardaway's first year as well as our first in the Great Midwest. The arena held 20000 and at that point, the sound reinforcement wasn't completely installed. The sound levels there had to approach rock concert level. Can't believe the Pyramid is about to be a Bass Pro .

Moving from the Pyramid to FedExForm did wonders for Memphis...I believe we've won 90% of ours game there. (That's Duke/Kentucky type numbers)

USM has really used last year's season and good season so far to to increase their attendance!

Also, for fellow pirate fans, we use to average over 5k even in Stokes couple years and McCarthy's first few years but we have struggled to get back to averaging over 5k even with improvement under Lebo. I can only think it is b/c season tickets have not gotten back to previous levels or students not turning out?

The Mid South Coliseum, with it's cramped and scarce bathroom facilities and concession stands that made Legion Field look like a grand buffet, in my prejudiced opinion was the best venue on Earth to watch a college basketball game.

I think that the basketball capacity was more like 11,200 and before today's game became a long commercial advertisement by 25 sponsors interrupted 10 or 12 times by a few minutes of basketball, it was jam packed with loud and passionate fans. I know that finances require selling as much advertising as possible, but it's sometimes hard to tell if you're watching an infomercial or basketball game.

Oh, but to have one more important game inside the Mid South Coliseum.......

season ticket sales were around or a little up from last year, which were the highest ever I think. student support has been solid. the couple of home games during holiday break are pushing the average down. I think as conference play moves along, we'll see an increase. We draw better Saturday evenings than we do Wednesday nights, 7pm.

Avg w/o Memphis - 4,145
  • 6 above the average

Of course Memphis is the big outlyer.

If you remove the top two and the bottom two, the average is 4,251. The other 8 are almost +/- 1,000 of that average. A 2k range isn't too tight, but its fairly similar.

I know Mid South Coliseum was condemed but doesn't it still stand? What are the future plans for that structure/property?
