Some things never change.

James couldn't even dribble the ball without fumbling it in a damn dunk contest.

I think what makes guys like Blake Griffin, Carter, Jordan so great in the dunk contest is that they don't really care much about. I think James White has been dreaming about dunk contests his whole life instead of championships.

this is dead on imo

I was never a james white fan...I have an issue with players that would rather look good losing than look bad winning. James White fits in the camp of the former.

RE: James White
I've never understood the excitement for dunk contests, or even dunking during games.

If the NCAA would ban dunks (as they did from 1967-76, commonly known as the Lew Alcindor, now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, rule), I think quite a few big men would develop better offensive games.

Yeah I dunno, he pretty much has always had one dunk - start from way back, sprint towards the FT line, do something in the air (around the head, between the legs, reverse between the legs etc) and then stuff it at the last possible micro-second.

When he pulls it off it is insanely cool and it is obvious there are damn few, if any who could even think of trying the same dunk.

Obviously he can jump incredibly long and pretty high, but I am still not sure how a guy with so few dunks in his competition repertoire and such a low finishing rate ever became thought of as a great dunker.

RE: James White
Actually, prohibiting the dunk between 1968 and 1976 didn’t deter offensive play. The average number of field goals made in Division I men’s basketball games steadily increased in those years.

As opposed to what we see now.
