I've wondered about that. I tend to give Louisville, Cincy, UH, etc. the benefit of the doubt and assume they want to be in a conference with good teams... even though we do seem to be the mid-major dream crusher. Don't forget Louisville in 1990: 10-1-1 with a Fiesta Bowl win and a loss to USM. They still let us in CUSA 1.0, although begrudgingly. I'm not sure what changed... TV? Shelby Thames?

Wish you would have won that UAB game. Stakes would have been much different. As it turned out, you're guys had a chip on their shoulder and our guys were reading their press clippings.

They want to be in conferences where it is easy to get to the opponent and have a nice place to stay and eat when they get there.

No, we didnt' cost the conference anything... TCU cost the conference in '03.
Houston costs the conference in '11
(and USM cost the conference in '11 as well (when we lost to UAB)...)

Cause if we had beat UAB... the winner of Houston/USM was going to at least the Sugar Bowl that year.

Yep, if we'd have actually had something to play for like uh did it would have been a one sided ga.......oh wait - it WAS a one sided game with the one side actually having a bcs game on the line taking a severe butt whipping.

Anyway - even without the who cost C-USA component - it was more like 16 million total. The non AQ conferences didn't get the full bcs bowl payout....nope - that payout is about 40% of the advertised amount for the 1st team out of an AQ conference. i.e. - if the payout this year is 20 million, then NIU is going to get about 8 million (including the full cost of 17,500 tickets as part of that 8 million). In short - the losers of those games cost the conference huge amounts of "credibility" but not nearly the amount of actual cash most folks think.

That was yet another inequality of the BCS system often overlooked.
After all the hoops & roadblocks put up to keep programs out, the non-AQ BCS participant received a substantially lesser sum than an AQ school.

You are not in the BE because college sports (and particularly CFB) has become so incredibly bass ackwards that on the field results don't matter to conference leadership anymore somehow. I am not here to pump up the Big East and it is still TBD to see which conference out of the BE and C-USA will have more success moving forward, but if USM wanted to be in the BE and CFB made sense they would be there. Heck if you figure there are 70 some odd schools in the top 6 conferences (whichever conferences they may be) USM should be in one. They damn sure are one of the top 70 teams historically. Unfortunately all of us weren't in great positions back in the leather helmet days when many conferences were formed so we missed that boat, and now CFB is so screwed up that winning gets you nowhere.

I seriously wish we could just push a reset button on CFB and everyone would end up somewhere they were truly happy, but I'm not even sure that is possible. So many of us are making lateral moves just trying to get a leg up. Hell I would settle for going back to 1997 or 2005 if there would be some guarantee that nobody would move around.

EDIT: No disrespect meant to the incoming schools either. Just longing for the "good old days". I'm sure C-USA will keep improving with it's current/incoming membership as it does every time this happens.

1) There was never any question that we would be a founding member of CUSA. Never

2) Thames had nothing to do with us being in CUSA. He was not President at the time.

3) There are 2 reasons we are still in CUSA. Market and budget in that order. The first one we will never be able to do anything about. The second one is on us. We sat on our hands and did nothing under a idiot AD for a decade. Some of us tried to call him out, the majority nailed us to a cross over it.

4) It funny the reasons USM fans come up with as to why we are still here. But hey, if it makes you feel better, no harm.

point 4....does it matter...more importantly, how has this hurt us since nobody knows how it will end? I am not happy, but as of now, I don't see how this makes any difference today...believe me, I am nervous, but not too much at this point

RE: Southern Miss has cost C-USA nearly 40 million dollars?
It doesn't I just find it funny. No one fears us. No one cares what we have done in the last 50 years, they do care what we have done in the past 5. Our record against the teams that are leaving are pretty balanced over the last five with the exception of UCF. And yet they still have more division titles and Championships than we have.

It has nothing to do with fear....it has everything to do with money.
