Marshall DC hire
Smoke seems to be focused on Chuck Heater, defensive coordinator from Temple.

RE: Marshall DC hire
Chuck Landon of the HD has it as Heater also.

Heater to become DC

Chuck Heater seems to be a good hire. He likes to bring line stunts off the edge and desguise blitzes. He was with Steve Addzio at Temple and stayed behind to interview for the Temple HC job. Heater is also who DOC wanted to bring in when he got the job in 2009.

He makes zero in game adjustments and refused to bench players who stunk and got lit up. Enjoy.

Isn't your HC suppose to bench players and didn't Heater have you 11th in D- in 2010. Allowing only 13.9 ppg and 311 ypg. Also didn't Temple lose 6 starters and 3 back ups off that D-, did you expect new guys not to miss a beat.

Maybe he made zero adjustments that final year because he didn't have the players to come off the bench and play? Was he not a finalist for your head coaching position and had you guys ranked in the top 15 in defense the year before?

Besides, there is nothing wrong with a guy wanting to better himself and move on to a better program. What's wrong with that? No different than Addazio moving on.

Don't forget taking a defense made up of entirely MAC players to the Big East

Even so he has to be better than Rippon.

Landon wrote today that with the recent departure of Tony Peterson to La Tech and Lytrell Pollard to Southern Miss, it freed enough money up to pay Heater and Legg $200,000 a year and possibly add Steve Dunlap as linebackers coach.

We don't need him to be the Steel Curtain. With just a modest defense in 2012, we win 8 games at least.

With a decent D, we win 8, with a good D, we win 9, with a great D, we can win 10-11. The only game Im worried about next year is VA Tech, and if they don't improve any we could come out of Blacksburg with a win.

As of right now our schedule looks like this

Home
Gardner Webb
Miami OH
USM
ECU (If still here)
UAB
Tulane (If still here)

Away
Ohio
VA Tech
FIU
LA Tech (Think they will be an east team for a few years)
UTEP
UNT (Assuming they take SMU)

He plays a very soft bend-dont-break D, which we saw with Mark onofrio (no D) who is now with Golden at Miami. It was very frustrating to watch.

Perfect.

That sounds less frustrating than watching your corners line up 8 yards off the WR on 3rd and 7... all season long.

In the middle fedora years we scored 50 points and still lost on occasion. it sounds reasonable enough; "we don't need much defense. We will just out score everyone". But it turns out that if you don't have a defense, everyone you play suddenly looks like the patriots. It's difficult to out score the patriots.

You sound kinda butthurt.

I actually seen a post on the Temple board that ask why Heater would "Downgrade" his position. Really...Going from Temple to Marshall is a downgrade. Umm sure....

I can almost bet Heater will have more to work with a Marshall than he did at Temple. Hell one of those on D at Temple came from Marshall.

Most HC's are not micro-managers on GameDays...as they generally green light (players that are allowed to go in at almost anytime) or red light (players not allowed to be substituted unless ok'd by the HC) that their position coach and coordinator do most of the substituting/play calling.

For Marshall, their D can't get any worse...so any change will probably improve their D...which would be a good thing.

Also, Marshall's Offensive Coaches have to learn how to control their no-huddle offense better...especially when their own D is tired...as a quick 3 and out with less than 30 secs run off the clock kills their already tired D.

One can mix in a no huddle offense (helps eliminate opposing D substitution patterns), but still let most of the 25 or 40 sec clock to run off...just so that Marshall's D can get SOME rest.

No huddle offense doesn't mean a play has to be run every 15 secs.

Well the potential "splash" name has been leaked it's Randy Shannon. Nowhere near official yet and nothing more than rumor, but either way I expect us to know who our new DC will be in the next day or 2.

I wasn't refering to subbing in and out. He said that Heater refused to "Bench" players that weren't playing well. In that case it's up to the HC to take action and rework your 2 deep then. Thats not micomanaging.

I didn't watch any Temple games and it could be like MUHERD76 said "Maybe they didn't have the player depth to sub in and out or change the 2 deep". Temple lost 9 players off their 2011 roster that were starters or backups on D-. You can't take that many player out and just plug 9 new players in and expect to keep doing what you were doing.

Yea, thats the name ive heard too, even though it could be more than a rumor thats the same name Pirate Radio has reported. Im far from in the loop so I rely on alot of message boards and 247 sports. If that happened it would be a coup and a major step up from what just exited. I hope it happens but I cant get too excited until the ink is dry and its officially announced.
