Remember the half dome? http://www.birminghamster.com/index.php?...ticlenum=2 It'd probably sell out for an NFL team.

RE: NFL to Birmingham?
I would say the top ten for expansion or moving a team would be
1) L.A.
2) OKC
3) Toronto
4) Mexico City-Had a great crowd when exhib games play
5) London-has had support when NFL-Europe played. Got to get around the time zone/travel issue/divisonal play
6) Frankfurt/Berlin-Germany always had the strongest crowd in NFL Europe. Got to get around the time zone/travel issue/divisonal play
7) San Antonio
8) Las Vegas-slim
9) Did I say L.A.?
10) it pains me, but maybe Memphis-need new stadium

Ah, but remember, at the end James Earl Jones points out at the driveway and says, "Build it, and they will come."

Which, in that context, is directly on point, whether you agree with said point or not.

i dont believe this is true...if you go back and watch the movie, i believe you will find that you are incorrect. if im incorrect, please let me know
actually, now that i reread this, it may be correct (i have no idea)...but its certainly not the same as the original quote.

im pretty sure that the movie never, ever says "If you build it, they will come."

It's "Field of Dreams". The first time Kevin Costner hears it, it's the voice in the cornfield, "If you build it, he will come".

Later, just before the movie ends, you get James Earl Jones' lovely speech, and the wording is slightly different. I was using the quote as a general derisive comment, not a word for word movie quote.

Terrance Mann (James Earl Jones):

"Ray. People will come, Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn into your driveway, not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door, as innocent as children, longing for the past. “Of course, we won’t mind if you look around,” you’ll say, “It’s only twenty dollars per person.” And they’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it, for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk off to the bleachers and sit in their short sleeves on a perfect afternoon. And find they have reserved seats somewhere along the baselines where they sat when they were children. And cheer their heroes. And they’ll watch the game, and it’ll be as they’d dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come, Ray. The one constant through all the years Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come. "

Birmingham can't have a team in a football league unless the league is going to fold. In that vein, a league cannot fold unless it's had a team in Birmingham. Which is why the UFL still has life, because no teams in Birmingham yet.

In sum, Birmingham is the Ted McGinley of professional football.

The reason so little "damn" is given about the "SC"s is that there is no great demand for tickets to games those 1600 who hold them want to see. The certificates are valid contracts as long as there is Legion Field and as long as the game within it is football. They are perpetual in their longevity regardless in whose hands they may reside today. It was said that the Crawford Johnson family bought up a lot of them for business reasons. For years they were valuable assets that were sold and resold for cash value. There were ads in the NEWS Classified asking $2,000 to $4,000 each when Alabama and Auburn played there annually.

Since the annual bowl game doesn't develop ticket demand until the two participating teams are named at the end of the season, it doesn't stir up the certificate problem since the west stand privileges (2,000 in sec 10 & 11 + the Gold Seats) end at the 30 day prior to game mark (7 days for the 2,000 east stands 50 yd line seats). An NFL owner would quickly become very aware of their existence since his schedule would be public in the summer.

I remain convinced that they contributed to B'ham being excluded from NFL consideration decades ago, and with the birth of premium seating plans at Bama and Auburn, they guaranteed the enlargement of their own stadiums where ALL seats can be priced to the school's advantage.

NFL is obviously not coming to Birmingham but it's not as far fetched as you think. Mr. Watkins tried to buy the Minnesota Vikings several years ago and was toying with the idea of bringing them to Birmingham. I actually think this area would support an NFL team. If a person with crazy money wanted to bring a team here I believe a new stadium would take care of itself while also bring back the super six to Birmingham and enhance the BBVA Compass Bowl's status. With all that being said, it's not happening.

Sacramento's bent over backwards for that team, and they're just bound and determined to leave them high and dry anyway. Kevin Johnson (Mayor of Sacramento) did everything he could to try and keep them there. When and if the NBA expands again, Sacramento should be the very first city to get a franchise.

Seattle should never have lost the Sonics in the first place, their sports fans are among the best and most loyal of all.

I remember that occurrence regarding the Vikings, that story came across as a legitimate shot. Birmingham also used to host an occasional NFL preseason game, I was at "Lesion" Field for the Redskins - Falcons game.

Turnout was nice, but not nice enough by NFL standards. The dome would not have guaranteed pro sports would come calling (that's not what its' primary purpose would have been), but it would have at least gotten their attention. Kiss the Super 6 goodbye for a good while, 5 or 6 more years, minimum. I think a contract was signed a month or so ago that keeps the rotation between Auburn and "Updykeville" going a bit longer, of course, Birmingham & "historic" Legion Field is not in the loop & shut out of the process. And if something isn't done soon about the stadium situation in this city, get used to being on the outside looking in.

The cost of a team from the time Watkins wanted it is a lot greater now.

Wasn't it Red McCombs that wound up winning that acquisition of the Vikings? His pockets were probably much deeper than Watkins, who was also, I think, considering a run at the-then Anaheim Angels (MLB), but, I don't think Birmingham was on his list of cities to move the team to had he made that purchase.

Not sure, but at the time Watkins wasn't that well liked by a lot of people in the area.

I can't remember if he was involved in the Eric Ramsey deal against Auburn or if it was the Jelks deal against Alabama.

I do recall the Redskins game against Atlanta, I believe I went to it here.

It wasn't a very big draw, which is a surprise.

At the time, more fans were Redskins fans than Falcons fans.

Why? It was a preseason game(right?), and you know football only exists on Saturday in this state. It isn't freaking rocket science to me.
