UPDATE:San Diego State appears to have made a decision to return to the Mountain West Conference.
"The Mountain West Conference has informed presidents and athletic directors of its members schools that San Diego State is expected to decide this week on whether to stay in the conference or join the Big East Conference," sources told Jeremy Fowler of CBSSports.com.

"One Mountain West source said a decision should come before the Big East's meeting of presidents and athletic directors on Friday in Dallas. Another source classified a deal being 'on a pretty fast track.'"

The next question for the Mountain West is whether the league will stick with 12 teams after the addition of San Diego State or if it will expand to 14 teams. Tulsa, BYU and UTEP are believed to be targets.

UPDATE:Boise State did have its say in San Diego State's re-admittance to the Mountain West Conference.

"The Mountain West will extend an option to San Diego State to join the league before offering membership to any other institution," Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman reported. "The right of first option to San Diego State shall expire on Jan. 31, 2013."

San Diego State is undecided on its future.

"MWC contract stipulates SDSU has 1st option to join MWC but 'votes not there yet,'" source tells ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy.

The Mountain West will then concentrate on a 12th or potential 13th and 14th members once San Diego State makes its decision. Houston, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa reportedly top the list. Cincinnati could also be in play for the league.

Too bad Thompson says UTSA is not in the mix. But they should be if we go to 14 or 16 teams. UTSA is going to be a dominate new program in FB and already ranked 77th nationally. Their campus is home to 30,968 students, and San Antonio is also the #36 media market. In 2011, the Roadrunners finished their first FB season with a record of 8-4, and set a record for the largest average home attendance for a new football program with 35,521 fans in the Alamodome.

I wouldn't mind having UTSA join with another Texas school.

Wouldnt UTEP make more sense from a geographic standpoint? Its WAY the hell out in western Texas.

Yes, if 14 UTEP and UTSA assuming Tulsa went to the nBE.

UTEP left b/c they didn't have an in state rival. Now they just want to get out of CUSA. We won't have 13 so UTSA would be the next best w/ SMU, Houston, Tulsa off the table.

I have Lot of friends down in San Antonio and there lots of support for the Runners...

UTEP / UTSA would be a great pair for the MWC..

I wouldn't be shocked to see NBE make a play for them if their commish can convince UH / SMU when Navy Comes in 2015

but no In state school wants another one to get up to their level...

Just look at USF and UTSA taken their route; plus no Pro Team besides the Spurs..

Check out the schools who UTSA will be playing.. teams want to play in San Antonio..

As A Frog I understand UH / SMU Stance was the same with Tech / Baylor With Us..

But this just make Since for the MWC the gamble will pay off.....

Welcome back to the MWC if it happens, James. You have to admit that Memphis, Tulane and Temple are not the "western division teams" we were promised, nor are they suitable replacments for the likes of West Virginia, Rutgers, and Louisville in the Big East.

But now that we have SJSU, USU, and Frenso State in the MWC, it won't be so bad.

Honestly speaking, Miner fans don't care about SDSU either, so the feeling is mutual. And we hope you stay in the BE. We care about UNLV, UNM, AFA, Colorado State, and even Boise St (tho we have not been in a conf together before). Besides, according to how you speak on other boards, "SDSU wouldn't be better served to go back to the MWC" Link-BE Thread. So why worry about what shetbirds are in the MWC.

If your school is chasing Boise St without being able to stand on its own, it is an indication that you are not the powerhouse you think you are, in your mind.

I wasn't sure what folks were referring to, with negative comments about the SDSU fans and their attitude...... But thank you for educating me.

We aren't a powerhouse by any means, but lucky (or unlucky) for us you don't have to be a powerhouse to own this conference.

Which means none can afford to be picky.

I say UTEP would be a good addition to the MWC.

El Paso has a Bowl game.

UTEP fans love their sports. They are basketball crazy and the football program will improve.

El Paso is a growing city and I am sure there are many UTEP fan just across the border in Juarez.

I think UTEP has as much to offer as Reno and the MWC added Reno.
