What I have heard is instead of being split at the NC/VA line, the NC schools will remain being split between the divisions (primarily to keep VT and/or UVA happy) with a geographical outlier being put in the South.
My unscientific WAG would be it would break down like this, listed by cross division rival:
North South
BC Clemson
Duke Wake
UNC NCSU
Pitt GT
Syracuse Louisville
Virginia FSU
VT Miami
The only problem is competitive balance.
Then it's time for the North to fish or cut bait. Iron sharpens iron, as the SEC West shows, and having the best compete against the best each year prepares our teams for the coming playoffs.
I agree...those divisions would be awesome. another thought is to put Miami with the northern schools and ship Pitt south.
I could live with that, but from what I am hearing Miami is opposed to being in a north division. I could see one reason being the fact that they struggle with ticket sales to begin with, and they would stand a greater chance of having decent visiting crowds from more games versus south division teams versus north division teams.
This. I don't want to be in a North division when all of our rivals (or big name opponents) like FSU, VT, GT, and Clemson would be in the other division. No thanks.

I still like North/South with the VA/NC border the dividing line and Miami in the North and Miami/FSU a protected rivalry game.
Or, if you really want to do something different...how about a "Before 1991" division and an "After 1991" division?

North South is easier, but sets up two problems:
1) Old line ACC v. Big East
2) Insufficient exposure of norther schools to recruits in the south
Based on the first, none of the schools (read: Presidents/Chancellors, BOTs, Major Supporters) will want it. Based on the second, none of the northern schools will want to give up exposure to recruits.
As fans, we may want the division clean and simple, but we are not consulted in this decision making process and even if we were, the powers that be would do whatever they want to do, anyway.

I would agree if my information came from just a fan.
At this point after dropping back to 8 conference games and the addition of Louisville over UConn I wouldn't be so quick to downplay the divisions being realigned to keep the football schools happy.

I had a lengthy post about the advantages of geographic divisions and what geographic set-up would maximize/preserve existing rivalries, reduce travel costs, and promote fan interest/travel. Then I realized that the divisions I set up were the exact same ones as catdaddy proposed.
+1 for this set-up.

I agree w/ Cat - it's a new day in the ACC, and I wouldn't be surprised if the ACC started doing things that make football sense (I know, I know, hard to believe). I think the center of ACC power has shifted towards the football schools...

As the fan of an outside school on its way in, I would personally LOVE this.
The only difference I would make would be to switch Louisville & Georgia Tech because I think Pitt makes a bit more sense as an annual football rivalry. It's closer to Louisville than Syracuse, we're both on the Ohio River, we're both public urban institutions, and both were founded in the 18th century. The rivalry should be promoted in the ACC more than it ever was in the Big East.

The problem is you can't do that without separating UVA from either VT or UNC. You can't put UNC in the south with them without separating them from NCSU or Duke. Louisville makes more sense being the outlier in the south because despite sharing a conference with the other ACC newcomers for a short while they really don't have any long term relationship with anybody in the ACC football wise.
Cat is 100% correct - there are actually 2 sets of teams which need to stick together:
Miami / FSU / GT / Clemson
and VT / VA / UNC (and UNC needs to play both Duke and NC State annually)
Cat Daddy's division preserve all important rivalries that I'm aware of.
im fine with cats divisional setup with 1 minor tweak id have louisville in the north with either pitt or bc in the south

RE: [split] More divisional alignment stuff
I think power is always overrated here. The divisions last time weren't exactly fit in a way the North Carolina schools would have liked (they'd have preferred to be together) and it seemed like a big compromise to me (divide the north/south/central parts of the conference).
That said, with all the new additions and lose of Maryland, it just makes too much sense not to look hard at these again. I never liked the idea of simply adding Pitt/Syracuse to each side anyway.
