Michigan Marching Band Director to become Director of Bands at WMU
Posted on MMB's Facebook:

"Today Professor Scott Boerma announced his resignation as Director of the Michigan Marching Band to students in their post-bowl wrap up meeting. Dr. Boerma is leaving UM to take his "dream job" as Director of Bands at his alma mater, Western Michigan University. While we are all very sad Professor Boerma will leave us, we are thrilled his dream has come true."

Stunning. How many times have you ever read the words, "my dream job" and "at WMU" in the same sentence?

That is awesome. I have so many friends in the music program, I'm excited to hear what they think about this.

He came back to homecoming in 2011 to talk to the BMB and seemed incredibly excited to be at WMU. he was a Drum Major in the BMB while he was here.

I don't know what this means.

Is he taking over for David Montgomery? Or someone else?

He's taking over for Robert Spradling, who is retiring. Dr. Montgomery is still BMB director and assistant Director of Bands.

Or how about "leaving his position at scUM for an equivalent position at WMU?"

Pretty good. Go Broncos.

He had a great, detailed bio at scUM. Link below.

Thanks, Whinny1.

I'm thinking that with his extensive composition and arranging experience, maybe he can help upgrade the marching band's repertoire in the stands.

It sounds the same today as years ago. Time for some new material and to update the sound of gameday. Just my opinion but it needs an overhaul.

that's not the problem. WMU has an arranger that does the work for near free. Copyrights are too expensive and the band doesn't get near enough funding.

Thanks for that context. We need more of that when it comes to the band here.

So our great school of music doesn't have anybody that is creative? Come up with some new original musical cheers/chants or tags. Not everything is copyrighted. I'm not talking about the show music but for the band when in the stands during the game. If I hear them play the lame ESPN tag again, I'll scream (unless it is something like a Jordan White one handed catch in the bowl game type play).

I can understand the copyright issue but it doesn't mean that things can't be spiced up by using the creative talent there at Western to create some new material for when in the stands. A University is supposed to be an ideas place, isn't it?

Sad that copyrights have gotten so expensive. Perhaps I just expect too much. It's a shame and I say that as a BMB alum.

I agree that the band music is stale.... For a while last year they were playing the bed intruder song, that was funny and cool. Mix it up like that!

As long as they don't stop playing Third Quarter Chant, I agree that some change would be nice to see. Throwing in funny and trending songs (Bed Intruder) connects with the students and creates a fun atmosphere.
