That's been true of all of Mick's teams. He needs to recruit more players, fewer athletes.

the basketball iq thing sure stood out tonight. It was amazing watching Notre Dame's players passing the ball with so much precision and controlling the ball. Cooley, Connaughton and Martin seemed to be the guys that didn't force anything and then worked so well with grant and atkins. UC doesn't have anyone on the team with the top level fundamentals required to take it all. A guy can be so quick and leap so well and dunk with the best but if they can't stop turnovers and can't hit open jumpers what good are they?
hats off to mike brey and notre dame. Maybe someday we can see a team like that at UC.
But, if our coaches look only for certain types of players, that dont have skills but are flashy, we are screwed in the long run.

I'll put a lot of it on the bigs tonight. We cannot win with Gaines in the lineup and Rubles is still strggling to hit his shots. Rubles is the unluckiest shooter i have ever seen with his shots spinning out but he has to realize that his 3 point shooting isn't going to help us this year. Maybe next year will be different but titus scored the first 2 points of the game and then NOTHING the rest of the way. He did have 7 rebounds but we needed baskets.
Nyarsuk and Mbodj shot better tonight but I got to see it happen for more than 1 game to feel good about that.
Against a team with great fundamentals and basketball smarts, the double team on defense wasn't going to work. They got way too many easy baskets because of it. I got tired of Gaines and Mbodj being in the wrong place and the wrong time.

I'd like to know why the Coaches' decision was not to play Jackson tonight. He usually sucks with our other biggies on offense but he's much better than Gaines.

they gave up a lot of baskets during the game because of gambling on defense. Chuck carried on a lot about it earlier in the game. Gaines doesn't have a clue out there. Division I is a bit over his head right now and I am not sure he'll ever be able to help us the next 2 years. We seriously need a big man to come in that can shoot and knows the game of basketball. I'm tired of watching the foreign big men that have been here. The last 3 have been nothing to get excited about and their lack of knowledge and fundamentals kills us.

The 7 second half turnovers were costly, especially since a few of them were unforced (Parker's travel). Freethrow shooting as well. If those two things go our way we win. Knows everyone will talk about the defense, but ND is a very efficient offense and 60 points won't beat them. Upset at the officiating, but it poor officiating is expected when playing in this conference (was very careful when making this point so he didn't criticize them in a direct way and earn himself a fine).

Thought one positive was going to the bench a bit more. Nyarsuk, Guyn, Shaq, and Sanders all contributed at times...but maybe that also led to the defensive confusion against such a smart, well-coached, good passing team. Have to have those young guys contributing, particularly Shaq who could really be the offensive outlet the team needs if he can figure some things out defensively.

RE: UC vs Notre Dame Game Thread
They have major problems on offense and defense that need to be fixed quick or this team is going to struggle to not lose 10 games. Take their offensive strategy for instance....What is it? They dribble around the 3 point line and chuck up ugly shots. If you watch the games like I do, I judge each possession. Alot of times youll catch me yelling what the hell kinda shot is that...oh it went in. A good majority of the time UC scores its off a bad shot that should never be taken in the first place. SK just throwing up 3s right when he gets it or shaq, rubles,JJ,our bigs when they do drive just throw the ball at the rim. And its sad because our offense looks really impressive when they penetrate the lane and get some ball movement. You arent fooling anyone when you lackadaisically pass the ball around the arc. You arent even forcing the defense to play defense. Its terrible basketball

RE: UC vs Notre Dame Game Thread
I thought the Bearcats played solid yesterday, not great. I think Notre Dame is better than I thought. They really shoot the lights out and I count probably 5-6 shots that they had no business making with a hand in their face that were nothing but net. They spread the defense out so well and everyone on the floor can score and they don't turn the ball over. The offense played better and the bigs are starting to get it. ND did a good job trying to take away Cash. Heck we almost shot as well from the floor, only a couple more turnovers, out rebounded them. They got us at the foul line (And the fact UC almost had twice as many fouls and a couple non-calls on ND were at crucial times (Foul on SK at the end of the half and the certain over the back call on that 3 possession for ND near the end which allowed ND to run 1:30 off the clock, plus there were a few other WTF moments, but those 2 were pretty obvious and had the announcers even wondering).

This is a team that destroyed UK and while UK was overrated at the time, that UK team came close to beating Duke around the time the Notre Dame crushed UK, so I think Notre Dame is much better than expected.

Hopefully this is the rough patch most teams hit and we can build upon this performance as we hit the road.

RE: UC vs Notre Dame Game Thread
I think the St Johns and New Mexico games were far more indicative of the issues UC has than this game. UC's inability to finish inside against those teams is an issue we saw even early in the year.

I thought the big issue with ND was that when Cheik got in foul trouble, Neither David, nor Kelvin could defend the high pick and roll. This was particularly noticeable because ND is the rare team that spread the perimeter with 4 shooters. So either UC would have to help down and give up a three, or they would give up the dunk. ND had a couple stretches with Cheik on the bench where they just lit UC up. UC was +10 for the game with Mbodj on the floor, and -16 without him. That was the difference in the game.

At least we know why they chose the black-out unis.

Considering what transpired, player anonymity was a good thing.

The only player I could pick out with ease was Kilpatrick because he'd take stupid shot. 03-nerner

Spot on. Could not agree more.

What's your point Bro? The dude looked like Jordan last night with some of the shot clock fadeaways. How is comparing someone to MJ a put down? Wasn't happy he was hitting those against UC but he was impressive nonetheless.
