60 Billion
Having a little trouble with this. They interview the Sandy victim in front of his beach front home. Says he can't rebuild for lack of money. Did he get money from FEMA? Yeah he says, he got 32,000, but that is not enough. When will they give me more money.
I am thinking, as a taxpayer, how is this my problem?
Also they are starting to tear out the new Jersey boardwalk. 25 million. Similar, why is this taxpayer bailout. I mean it is nice and everything, but why federal money?
THE 60 billion they are talking about seems like a round number and excessive in these times of deficits.
I would be down with low interest federal loans, but to just hand over the cash, hmmmm.
I hope we can get some clear thinking on this before they cut the check.

RE: 60 Billion
Are natural disasters void of anyone getting home insurance money? Or do these people with these "beach front" properties not insured? I would think personally I might find myself some insurance for my home to cover the likelyhood of hurricanes... IF I LIVED NEAR THE OCEAN...

RE: 60 Billion
Natural tendency to feel generous. And people have raised and donated a lot. And FEMA gave this guy 32,000 right away to help with temporary housing and emergency needs. That is fine with me, we are all Americans.
But this guy is standing there pissed off and saying he can not rebuild until the government comes in and does it for him. That is where I begin to have a problem. Like with the farmers, if there is a freeze, the give them a low interest loan, not a straight handout.
But it is not the taxpayers fault the guy wants a beach front house, or the farmer decides to grow peaches in Michigan. Or do we owe them somehow?
Boehner was right to delay this and allow some discussion.

In much of the USA flood insurance is NOT available.
Home owner must be in a participating NFIP community (and flood area) for you to be able to buy flood insurance.

RE: 60 Billion
This is where the rest of us need to learn to have an emergency fund in place. Also after Katrina there were many who argued flood damage v storm damage in a chicken v egg type argument. As the flood was technically part of the storm (storm surge) should it really be classified as a flood?
