If No Divisions...
If we don't go with divisions then why are we handcuffed to 10 or 12? Why not 11 or 13 being realistic? I mean with 13 you play 1 game against every one and a three year rotation of four schools twice every year.
For example. Marquette:
2013
GTown x2
DePaul x2
Prov x2
SLU x2
2014
SJU x2
Xavier x2
VCU x2
Creighton x2
2015
SH x2
Dayton x2
Nova x2
Butler x2
You know who you have going forward every year and we get the best schools and not leave anyone out.

I don't see anything wrong with an 11 or 13 team division. Anything larger than 10 and at most 14 makes sense to me.

Looking at the numbers John has been posting shows that we have 6 really good schools we can bring in who all have their strengths. I would hate for us to leave someone out due to some sill number we set for ourselves. Why not just bring in who fit with what we are doing and brings value to the new league? 16 worked in the BE before why not 13?
The tournament issue with having an odd number of teams means we just have a play in game at Carnesseca the day before play at MSG starts. It means if you finish 12th or 13th you need to win 5 games in 5 days.
EDIT: I just realized my count was off and we have 7 goo options. VCU, Richmond, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, SLU and Creighton.

I think it boils down to "how many teams should each team play H/H?"
There's probably diminishing returns on inventory somewhere. I'd need another cup of coffee to locate it.

10 Teams, 18-game schedule (90 games), H/H vs 10
11 Teams, 16-game schedule (88 games), H/H vs 6
11 Teams, 18-game schedule (99 games), H/H vs 8
12 Teams, 16-game schedule (96 games), H/H vs 5
12 Teams, 18-game schedule (108 games), H/H vs 7
13 Teams, 16-game schedule (104 games), H/H vs 4
13 Teams, 18-game schedule (117 games), H/H vs 6
From an RPI standpoint, 16 conference games is better than 18. You have more chances to win games without putting a loss on someone else in your league; and provides a larger margin for error in OOC play (Let's say your 4th and 5th place teams in a 10-team league are 9-9 in conference; They need to be AT-LEAST 9-3 OOC or they're in the NIT, because their first game in the conference tourney is the quarterfinals against each other and the loser is not making the dance at 17-14).

RE: If No Divisions...
Does anyone really care how many teams there are? The thought hasn't even occurred to me.
All I care about is the mix of teams 9, 10, 12, whatever is that yields the greatest sum to each member school
Whatever number they choose, everyone will get used to it after a year or two.
