I just love this quote by the coach:
“I want our players to dream big,” he said. “If they don’t aim high, they’ll never achieve great things. It was important me for to emphasize that there will be a MAC team in the BCS.”
However, Molnar said, he was in a way disappointed when he found out Northern Illinois was heading to the Orange Bowl.
“I did say to the team actually that we hoped that they didn’t make it to the bowl game because we wanted to be the first MAC team to play in the BCS.” he said. “At least now we can be the first ones to get a win.”
Wow...he really does dream big, doesn't he? Time for Molnar to wake up and start dreaming about winning regular season games - against anyone.

Journey of a thousand miles begins with single step. And your brain has to think about a step before you can take said step. Got to start somewhere.
Were any of us thinking about making the BCS on October 10, 1998 when NIU lost their 23rd straight game? None of us were even thinking MAC title. Huskie fans just wanted A WIN. Fast forward 12+ years and we just saw our school's team play on New Year's Day in Miami in front of a national TV audience.
Not that laughable. Crazier things have happened. I saw NIU play in the Orange Bowl. I saw Illinois play in a Rose Bowl. I saw Northwestern WIN A BOWL. Anything's possible.

Well, that's certainly the right attitude.

They wont be in the MAC long enough for that to happen. NIU will be giving them a beat down, the next time they play! Wishing, we didn't make it will not sit well with our team.

UM-ass coach has Temple-itus. We all know how that worked out the first time around. See you on the gridiron b*tches.

RE: UMass on NIU and Orange Bowl
After the recent upheaval of the Big East, who knows if UMass still wants to go to the Big East. Temple wanted to leave the MAC and return to the Big East. UMass has never been in the Big East and perhaps they get invited by the 7 Catholic schools to help form the new basketball conference and keep football in the MAC. There is no need or possible desire to reach the Big East since they lose their AQ status.

UMass ought to worry about winning A GAME first. Ans while they're at it, maybe they can work on scoring against next year.

They did win a game.. and they're in their first year in FBS, doesn't happen over night, but they looked much better post-NIU.
Why wouldn't they have these goals? NIU was the worst team in the country less than 20 years ago, now we've been in the Orange Bowl. Boise State didn't get to the WAC until 2001, look at them.
You should have big goals, good for them.

We're a prime example of dreaming big as the little guy. Like 84 said, it wasn't that long ago that we were the WORST football program in the country. Funny how people are so quick to forget where they came from. Do you expect the coach to say he's dreaming of winning 2 games in a season eventually? Good for UMASS.

I spoke with Coach Novak and Coach Kill and thanked them for dreaming big and MAKING dreams come to life. Told Coach Kill he did not have to be humble, he did a great job and Thanks.

RE: UMass on NIU and Orange Bowl
Nothing wrong with dreaming big and having ambition, but.....
it seemed like between the lines he doesn't have much respect for NIU despite having MAC roots, his time at Cincinnati and Notre Dame turned him into a big-timer.
"In recruiting we didn't necessarily talk about Northern Illinois going to a BCS game, but we talked in more general terms, that if we take care of our business, we'll have a chance to play in one of those games one day."
So does this mean UMass is not going to promote hosting the league champion and an Orange Bowl participant as a highlight of their 2013 schedule?
Coach Mallory was always MAC guy, coach Novak was always a MAC guy, and I never ever heard either of them ever saying anything that wasn't positive about the league. In fact, I remember coach Novak once saying you should never put down your opponents or your conference because then you diminish your own accomplishment when you win. He wasn't saying you have to like Toledo, Ball State, Ohio, etc., but you have to respect them and root for them to succeed any time when they're not playing you.
I'm taking a break from the GoDaddy bowl, but I'm sure as hell hoping Kent State wins! Although I have to admit I think those eagle eyes on the front of the helmet and the big K on the back look ridiculous.

RE: UMass on NIU and Orange Bowl
It means when he was talking to recruits before the dead period NIU probably hadn't even really been invited to the Orange Bowl. The majority of the time they were talking to recruits, they had no clue that would be the case.
You're reading way too much into what he said. He's only been completely positive about NIU anytime he talked about us.

Is this a Joke? This guy is a coach in the MAC and chose not to watch the conference's biggest game of all time? I'm not trying to be a college fan meatball, but come on.... this guy won't be in that position for too long

The guy is an NCAA football coach, I'm sure he'll have access to tape to see it many times, and from many more angles than we have. Just because he didn't watch it all while it was happening doesn't mean he isn't going to see it eventually or doesn't care about the outcome.
So he wants to spend the holiday's with his kids, with the quiet recruiting period, this is probably the best time he's going to have to do so.
He sets his goals too high, spends too much time with his family, next you're going to tell me he donates too much money to charity. The complaints here are just out of hand, you'd think the guy is out pulling a Bobby Petrino or Joe Paterno. Need to take off the red and black glasses, just because he's a coach of an opponent doesn't mean everything he does is a crime.

His team didn't go to a bowl game, he had plenty of time to spend with the family....I don't see allotting 3-4 hours from 8pm on to watch your conference's biggest game to be that demanding.....Just saying even my grandmother watched this game and she has no link other than my attendance at NIU, guarantee you Frank Zolich made time for it...

Yeah.. and your grandmother doesn't have access to the same film that UMass's coach does. He'll see the game. From multiple angles, over and over, he doesn't have to watch it live.
Coaching hours are insane, you only get so much time with your family when you have his job. I don't fault him for a second.
