RE: Enrollment and Endowment
(02-05-2013 05:52 PM)bostonspider Wrote:  Endowment is a funny thing. As stated, what good does it actually do the athletic department? Richmond's $1.95 Billion, as of 01.01.13, per Pres. Ayers, is pretty much set up as many many little endowments that support hundreds of separate things, as well as a large chunk, roughly $1B, which is general unrestricted endowment used to support the university as needed. UR spends 3% or so a year to keep tuition and other costs in check as much as possible. But, one thing Richmond has, which it does not seem the others here also have, is a $150 Million Athletic Department Endowment. This is used to offset the costs of scholarships for the various teams. This allows UR to spend its other resources, ticket income, NCAA payments, tv income (minimal as it is), sponsorship, etc on coaching salaries, charter jets for the teams, and all other expenses. Richmond currently spends upwards of $4 Million on basketball, which is currently the highest in the A10, and 5th highest of any non BCS school (BYU, Gonzaga, Creighton and Memphis), and this is without having to rent an arena, nor with much in the way or current TV revenues .

Basketball Expenses
Marquette - $10M
Georgetown $8.6M
Seton Hall $6.8M
St. John's $6.6M
Depaul $6.5M
Villanova $6.4M
Providence $5.5M
Gonzaga $5.3M
Creighton $4.8M
Richmond $4.0M
Dayton $3.8M
Wichita State $3.8M
Butler $3.5M
VCU $3.2M
SLU $3.0M
Xavier $1.7M

It would be interesting to see how much the C7 school have to spend on arena rentals, versus what the other schools have to budget for arena upkeep and the like..

http://www.bbstate.com/info/schools-hoopsbudget

Those are not the numbers I have seen. What I have seen is:

Georgetown $10,015,207
Marquette $9,941,583
St. John's $7,289,171
DePaul $6,657,771
Seton Hall $6,401,383
Villanova $6,398,678
Providence $6,110,824

Gonzaga $6,138,269
Xavier $4,707,053
Wichita $4,644,724
Creighton $4,404,350
Dayton $3,978,866
Richmond $3,971,226
Butler $3,924,026
VCU $3,803,913
Saint Louis $3,101,169
St.Joseph's $3,089,503

This is from the .gov site. It probably is more recent (the other one seemed like it might be from 2007).

RE: Enrollment and Endowment
Well, I guess you can say some of these schools are really well-endowed.

+1.

There are three caste classes when it comes to hoops spending of the C7+:

Realistically, no one in tier three is catching up to Georgetown or Marquette anytime soon, nor do they really have an urgent need to do so. We've seen what DePaul has to show for their spending....

How much of that cost comes from having to rent an NBA arena?

Bingo. Or the Century Link Center for that matter...

Maybe the renter teams all have sweetheart deals with their venues, maybe they don't and the rent goes through the roof once they're called up to the big leagues. Hard to say. But certainly that outlay has got to distort the aggregates.
