No wonder he didn't want anyone to talk about the playoffs.05-stirthepot

Dude, way to go with "being a good sport"... it takes a man to put Piers Morgan in his signature when he does not want to. Ouch... GTS is one mean dude!

I'm not saying the USFL = NFL, but it was legitimate professional football, and Mora went 7-1-0 as a head coach in USFL postseason games. His teams won 2 of the league's 3 championships.

Mora was overly loyal to a limited offensive coordinator.

I don't know; Carl Smith hasn't had any trouble staying employed since then. I think Hebert and Mora have to share the blame with Carl. That Eagles playoff loss in the Dome was Hebert's fault, I think. You can hire Norm Chow, but if you throw the ball to the other team, you're going to lose.

Smith has mostly been a position coach since then. If we're going to blame Hebert I guess we gotta throw Walsh in as well. He was QB for our loss to Chicago after the 1990 season. One thing that really didn't help was having the 49ers in our division. We had a couple of 12 win seasons where all we could get was a wildcard because the 49ers won 13 or 14. In 88 we had a 10 win season and didn't even make the playoffs.

Walsh was terrible. I remember a game where he fumbled, and then, instead of going after the ball, he did this bizarre little pantomime act designed to show that he had actually been trying to pass. It was really strange. I think this was in the 1990 versus Dallas.

I don't think Hebert was much better. This is a man who got kicked out of the LSU press box for cheering too hard for LSU. Bobby didn't even go to LSU. The man is not bright... college FB scholarship, over a decade as a pro, and he's still a T-shirt LSU fan. Yeah, his kid went there... but he was already an LSU nut before that.

I could go on and on about Fourcade, Wade Wilson, Dave Wilson (probably the best that Mora had), etc. but in summary, I don't think Carl Smith ever had a good enough QB.

And 1988? You can blame the refs. That wasn't a TD and even Rice knew it.

RE: OT: Jim Mora was 0-6 all-time in the postseason
I have to admit I was a USFL fan. Lived south of Tampa for a while and went to a lot of Bandits games (a few Buc's games too). Watched them play the Star's, cool. When Mora went to Saints I had discovered satellite dishes, it was cool not being forced to watch the Redskins or Cowboys every Sunday. Mora, the "dome Patrol", Rueben Mayes (for a while). Became a Saints fan then have been one since.

I was at the '90 Cowboys game. I don't think that is the one you're talking about. We lost that one when Craig Heyward fumbled on a wet field while we were driving for a game winning field goal. I believe the game you're thinking of was against the 49ers. Walsh was trying to kill the clock but the ball slipped out of his hand and went up instead of down. He watched the 49ers run it back for a TD and was signaling to the ref that he had spiked it.

Hebert was better than Walsh. Just look at the 91 season. We were 8-1 with Hebert starting and 3-4 with Walsh starting. Then after a 12 win '92 season we let him go and he went to a Pro Bowl with the Falcons...And we went on to 7 straight non-winning seasons.

I'm not going to say Hebert is dumb because he was cheering for his team. He's a fan with a media job. He's been an LSU fan his whole life and his kid played there. I can't fault him for that. Do you want to kick people who didn't go to USM out of the stadium? I like the way Hebert gets fired up in the pressbox during saints games. Here's the Hargrove fumble recovery for a TD vs. the undefeated (at the time) Jets our superbowl year:

The worst thing Bobby Hebert did was to hold out. Because of that, Finks sent a 1, 2 and a 3 to the Cowboys. Lost the picks and Walsh couldn't play a lick.

Yeah that was a horrible trade. The blame goes on Finks though. Hebert was benched in favor of John Fourcade the last three games of the '89 season...Hebert's contract was up and Finks told him he wasn't the starter and wouldn't be paid like one...Hebert held out...Fourcade stunk so bad we traded too much for Walsh...we should've just paid Hebert.

Good read:

Hebert's gamble in 1990 paid off big for NFL's players

Fair enough, but this one will surely be in the running. Jim Mora has been out of coaching for how long? And does he have any C-USA ties whatsoever? But it's also sports-related, so it's not a blatant troll. Kudos, OP.

I only made it because that stat came across the ESPN scroll (in reference to Marvin Lewis' playoff record), the playoffs are coming up and I wanted to make the joke in the OP.

Easy. Former Saints HC..The Saints started out playing in Tulane Stadium. They share the superdome now and when Mora was coach one endzone said Saints and the other said Tulane. Most Tech, Tulane, USM....possibly even UAB fans are Saints fans.
