RE: Do Academics Matter?
I'm not sure what institutions ETSU has an academic advantage over. ETSU isn't a rigorous academic institution by any means. That's not a knock, ETSU is a regional university and it serves its region. Unfortunately that region is a low income area with low graduation rates. I agree with MommaBear, that other schools will look at admissions standards of ETSU when evaluating them for conference affiliation. Right now ETSU has a solid "advantage" in this area, as practically any student who meets NCAA eligibility standards is admissible at ETSU. I also agree with Pitt, that the CAA should be the goal and would far exceed the past for a football program. The A10 is ideal from a basketball standpoint, but I agree with Pitt that it is not a realistic match for ETSU. I disagree with the idea that ETSU would be poised to move to the FBS level if it still had football. FBS is about TV markets and the Tri Cities isn't an appealing one.

As much as he's talked about it, alot. Academically though, ETSU does need some tweaking. Even if it actually hurts enrollment, push the admission standard for incoming freshman on a 4-5 year plan from a 2.3 up to around a 2.7 by year five.
Good grief man, if you can't pull a 2.3 in high school these days college probably isn't the answer here. With tutoring options, and high school teachers having to hit some of these ridiculous benchmarks they are going above and beyond getting today's high school kids atleast a C+, if not B level work in everything.
It's food for thought here, but conferences that get mentioned, the CAA especially cares about its' academics. I'm not really sure what ETSU has in common with JMU, William and Mary, Towson, Rhode Island, Delaware, Hofstra (other than dropping football), etc...
I wish ETSU had more in common academically with them, but as we sit today, they really don't.

JMU began as a normal school. I think Towson did too.

So did Memphis and Middle Tennessee. I hope it gets better, aside from athletics stuff, this is the kind of thing that Dr. Noland can really have a positive impact on.

Come to think of it, my ETSU degree was rather useless.

RE: Do Academics Matter?
I have a slightly different take on it as I am proud of the opportunities that ETSU has provided to students across the region. I think their admissions standards are ok and we should be the regional state school of an area that is not as economically advantaged as many other areas. Now, the school does not have to guarantee degrees to anybody as those must be earned and not easy to get. But I believe that giving students a chance at bettering themselves is not a bad thing. Sometimes I like to remind people what this area would be without ETSU. I think everyone can agree that it would a much worse place to live if it did not have ETSU. I just want to see it grow and continue to enrich the region!

Well, you don't really need a degree to drive a cab.

Not the ideal place for this post (largely because of the intrusions of you-know-who), but couldn't find a better one....
