Neither Florida nor Louisville handed out tickets for free though. Can't say the same for both teams in the Orange Bowl.

...so subtract the <2000 NIU students who claimed their free ticket.

Even with paying full price for a ticket in that section the price for the 1300 students that went via bus would still have been under $300.

So NIU and FSU handed out 18,000 free tickets. That sounds right. 01-wingedeagle

Overall not a good bowl season at all, too many games that were decided by the end of the 3rd quarter if not half time. Fans did not

The Big 12 had 4 teams lose by at least 14 and 3 were behind by more than 21 or more at the start of the 4th quarter Cotton A&M 34 OK 13, Fiesta OR 32 KSU 10 and Pinstripe Syracuse 35 WVA 14.

3 teams that obviously didn't deserve their bowl invites.

Louisville had Papa John's Pizza subsidize the cost of tickets, didn't they?

Answered my own question!

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...ville-fans
Quote: The Louisville-based pizza company made a donation to Louisville to help offset the cost of the remaining tickets to the Cardinals' Jan. 2 meeting with Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The tickets in the 600 level of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome were originally listed for $135 but now can be purchased through the school for $65 thanks to the donation from Papa John's.

The school and Papa John's have also teamed up with local military and charitable organizations to allow Louisville fans to purchase the discounted tickets for a soldier or youth in the New Orleans area. The ticket will be a tax deductible donation and, according to Louisville, it will ensure not only that the school sells its full allotment but also that those seats are filled with fans ready to support the Cardinals.

and your point is?

I am sure after the OB saw the tickets sold, attendance and TV ratings compared to the Sugar Bowl they felt very lucky.

Orange Bowl officials commented early that NIU was the most organized school they ever had. The MAC handled it right by distributing the payout fairly after Northern's expenses were handled.

Not sure how many NIU fans were in attendance, but it looked pretty good on TV and the crowd ended up better than I expected. Too bad the jerks over at ESPN aren't giving NIU any credit for hanging with FSU thru 3 qtrs..a heckuva lot more than Oklahoma (who Herbstreit was so emphatic on how they got screwed by NIU getting a BCS berth) and ND, who got blown out early and weren't even competitive until halftime in their bowl games.

Yep, a company headquartered in Louisville that bought naming rights to our stadium and whose CEO was born and raised across the Ohio River handed a bunch of money the AD (yet again) to get a Papa John's logo on the ticket. That's the exact same as handing out free tickets to anybody and everybody that wants one just to get people to travel, right?

Source? Because I'm pretty sure that never happened.

NIU: Gave tickets to their students who support the program through their student fees; Orange Bowl nearly sells out.
Louisville: Needed corporate donation to more than cut the price of tickets in half for their fans; still had sorry showing.

Seriously this was around 3% of the total tickets sold by the OB and 4% of the actual crowd.

Supposedly Florida had lower sales than Lousville. Big 'Ol Florida didn't get the fans there.

Actually we sold 15k of our allotment, which is more than the official numbers for FSU and NIU combined, and brought another 10k. Locals started referring to the city as "Lou Orleans". Florida is the one that didn't bring anybody, as their fanbase has a bad reputation of not showing up to bowl games, and yet they somehow sold more of their allotment than NIU. One Sugar Bowl official was quoted after the game saying something to the effect of "if it wasn't for Louisville fans we'd be screwed" while an Orange Bowl official goes on a rant about how disappointed they were when they got stuck with NIU.

And Papa John's was sponsoring tickets for only one section of the stadium, and this was after we had already sold 14k. http://www.nola.com/sugarbowl/index.ssf/...da_in.html

When it was announced NIU was the matchup, ticket prices for the Orange Bowl "plummeted on third-party ticket websites. As of Wednesday, upper deck seats were listed for $11 apiece on SeatGeek.com." FSU had to cut its ticket prices in half just to get them to sell, which says all kinds of things about how much their fans couldn't wait to see the long awaited matchup against a mighty MAC team. I remember looking on Stubhub for Orange Bowl tickets and found hundreds for only $6.50. You want to go on about how Papa John's sponsored a small segment of the remaining Louisville allotment, what do you make of this? http://floridastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1445638

So basically what it boils down to is you guys only "sold" 5,500 tickets to the biggest game in your school's illustrious football history despite your students getting in for free AND you got blown out, while we sent a massive contingent and kicked an SEC team ranked #3 in the country up and down the field all night. Sure the attendance at the Sugar Bowl was bad, but neither team resorted to handing out tickets for free or cutting prices in half for every ticket available.

I don't really know what you think you're bragging about. That you "only" got blown out by three touchdowns? Your school couldn't send anybody despite handing out tickets for free? In handing out tickets for free you still couldn't convince many students to make the trip? Throw me a bone here.

Where did you see that Louisville sold more than FSU and NIU combined? I read that Louisville didn't sell 15,000 tickets through the school. Meanwhile, NIU distributed 15,000 tickets. Bottom line: More people attended the Orange Bowl, and more people watched the Orange Bowl.

He seems to be just a troll. Not worth arguing with. Throwing out numbers for NIU that he must have grabbed out of thin air.

Yay, you beat Florida, nice job. Go back to your own board now.

Tickets "distributed" and tickets "sold" are two different things.

"NIU distributed 15,550 tickets from its allotment of 17,500 for the Orange Bowl, according to the NIU athletic office.

The school sold just 3,266 tickets, while 2,876 were given away to NIU students for free. The team (players, coaches and staff) and band was given 1,308 tickets, while the school donated 8,100 tickets."

http://www.daily-chronicle.com/2013/01/1...ed/ajzuer/

In essence, NIU was only able to "sell" 390 more tickets than they gave away for free to students, and the overwhelming majority of the tickets "distributed" were donations.

Compare that to Louisville, where we had "sold" over 14k tickets two weeks before the game was even played.
